Christopher, Could you include a link to the article on Ruth Pearl? I'll search around and try to find it. Danny was in a band in Atlanta with a friend of mine. It was called The Ottoman Empire, I think. She said he was a terrific guy and musician as well. Thanks.

Was doing some research on microfinance and came across a great article written by Daniel:

Grameen Bank, Which Pioneered Loans For the Poor, Has Hit a Repayment Snag

good, sober article. wonder what the most recent figures are... anyone know (Grameen's self-reported numbers are clearly unreliable)?

Think the big challenge with all NPO's (and NGO's) is the clear need for third party auditing, review and reporting systems. I've got no idea regarding recent numbers, and have been trying to put together some decent data regarding microfinance as a whole...and I'm having a challenging time getting much good information.

Any self-reporting must be easily verifiable (ie. Room to Read, number of schools built, etc.)

that's a tough nut and actually a weird argument in favor of centralization: less small stuff to keep track of... alternatively, can networks supply effective accountability? what are some good and sustainable examples?

(apologies if i am way off topic...)

Is this about Marianne Pearl, the wife of Danny Pearl who was killed?
