Think the big challenge with all NPO's (and NGO's) is the clear need for third party auditing, review and reporting systems. I've got no idea regarding recent numbers, and have been trying to put together some decent data regarding microfinance as a whole...and I'm having a challenging time getting much good information.
Any self-reporting must be easily verifiable (ie. Room to Read, number of schools built, etc.)

that's a tough nut and actually a weird argument in favor of centralization: less small stuff to keep track of... alternatively, can networks supply effective accountability? what are some good and sustainable examples?
