This thread is for people who have a great idea for doing some good in the world but who feel blocked, thwarted, frustrated or stumped by a particular difficulty that is threatening to undermine their plans.
Why CREDWISH?
It may sound like a desire for some credit: some cash, support, recognition or acknowledgement - maybe all of these. And it could in fact involve precisely that kind of desire.
But in fact Credwish is simply an acronyn for
And why Crucible?
Dictionary definition is:
noun 1 a container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. 2 a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact to produce something new.
So, on the one hand a melting pot for ideas; and on the other, a very difficult and trying experience, that acts as a refining or hardening process to produce something new. That's pretty much sums up the topic for the thread.
I never took part in the Lost in the Food Chain discussions on O.net but was always impressed by the way that those who did participate seemed to be able to offer ideas and support to each other. Hopefully this too will be a place where Nedsters can get together to brainstorm, sound things out and provide links and new perspectives.
The aim is lift, re-define, analyse, reframe, clarify, inspire, renew and hopefully above all to solve persistent problems.
Please use this thread for introducing and commenting on all the Credwishes that people put forward, but also for linking each separate Credwish to its own workspace where further problem-solving can take place.
Remember this is a place for specifics and details not for general angst or aspiration; for pooling ideas for fixing blockages that threaten the realisation of your plans, not for asking whether anyone can think of any interesting ideas for greening the deserts, reversing global warming or sharing wealth more fairly etc etc

I am really asking for single person numbers not totals. What is the participant registration fee per person, what is the cost of a visa per person, what is the cost of insurance per person, what is the cost of the uniforms per person. I am trying to come up with some kind of individual promotion.

Thanks Kayiwa and Linda.
That is now very clear. $557 x 17 is required = $9469
So two more bits of information are required:
- what fundraising efforts are in process (and how much are they likely to raise)?
- Seventeen $557 individual sponsor deals would do the trick (maybe less, depending on the answer to (1) above); but where might up to 17 sponsors be found at this late stage and what might be in it for them should they make money available?
This is where we Credwish! (C ould Re ally D o Wi th S ome H elp!) Any good deas, anyone?
Or even any embryonic ideas, that maybe we could bounce around a bit?

CREDWISH,.....Could Not Have Said, Or Expressed It Better
My name is Sherry,I am a 63 year old woman(with Fibrolyalsia),living in Austin,Texas.I am the single parent of a handicapped(son), who's name is David,he has Cerebral Palsy, and is severely mentally retarded.Along with all of the that, I am proud to say I am a ovarian cancer survivor, 6 years now.I major in Radio,Television,Film, and Video and had a promising career set in L.A.,shortly after graduation.I was blessed with a gift for the arts, especially photography and telling stories via videos. I was all set, with a couple of folks who were very interested in my work.Shortly before my graduation, my son was diagnosed. My promising career was short lived.I had to choose raising my son, or going to L.A. to fullfill my career. The decision was not difficult.Raising a handicapped child is all consuming,...a good single parent's personal dreams, aspirations, and desires are put on hold. We, my son and I, have come to a place in time where I would like to re-ignite, redefined of course. I have tried local, state, and federal sources to help me state up again,...with no success. What I am looking for to get back into photo and video productions; but in this time, you need quality eqiupment.(i.e.Panasonic DV Proline Camcorder AG-DVX100B, or Panasonic HDG-HS300K, or (cheaper version) CANON VIXIA 3.3MP HD Digital Camcorder. Now keep in mind the items I have mentioned also need their batteries, SD Cards, and a couple of accessories). When you do this kind of work and require obvious editing, so that you can pull your project together, you need a workhorse of a computer, that being 2)DELL ALIENWARE 17X. Highly reliable, the choice for folks that do any kind of work in audio or video production.Loaded with a big hard drive(optional upgrades if necessary)and lots of memory.3)Olympus Digital SLR Camera E-30.With the knowledge I gained from college, and the talent I have,...I would like to be able to share that,...I have something to give. but I can't do that without the proper equipment. There are opportunities that I can take part of,....taking stock photos and and stock videos, and competing in short film competitions (i.e.triggerstreet.com). I think I have earned a lot of things, but I was lessed with a wonderful son; but I think it's time where I can do more. I'm tired of being poor, and tired of dumster diving for groceries, and on occasion, gifts. If I am able to get back to work, with what I do best, I can improve my life, as well as my son's.No more dumster diving,.....and actually walk into a real grovery story, where you can recognize the labels, and the meats in the cooler. I am more than willing to work for all that I am asking for, but for now,I need a lending hand to fullfill my dreams, and when the time comes, buy David something nice for his birthday or Christmas. David and Fred, are these the same KJT kids we've been hearing about who so desperately need housing and school fees? Just trying to wrap my head around why/how a plane ticket to Norway would be the best way to help. Also, I don't see anything in the budget for lodging or food while in Norway. Has that already been arranged?
Sherry, it sounds like you'd be a perfect candidate for the new Kiva US program. If you applied, can you share the link to your loan application with us here?

Thanks for your post, Sherry.
I have a film project, which I am keen to discuss with someone, which fits the social entrepreneur focus of NED. I could do with someone to help move it forward and someone with expertise in film would be an asset. There might be some money to cover costs that could be raised from somewhere, but I have none, as yet. However, it is a strong project.
Message me, if you are interested in hearing a little bit more about it.

I have been travelling dark Kampala with Kabugo this evening and we have been talking a little about the Norway trip. We have had some discussions about whether Norway is a priority for the KJT teams and I am confident that it fits with KJT strategy.
Kabugo also advised that of the three top teams in Kampala, KKL (Kampala Kids League), Edgars and KJT, both the other two have their tickets bought and paid for by sponsors. In fact KKL are shortly to leave for Stockholm, which implies that they are going to combine it with a sizeable holiday, while the Kisenyi kids stay at home (at least at the moment).
While this is clearly unfair (and rather typical), I am suggesting to KJT that they consider all travel options/ports to reduce the (rather expensive) ticket price.
I saw the Juniors training tonight (briefly) and they show a lot of commitment to their sport. Kabugo has also been helping me track down members for the Butterfly Project and we have made some progress on that of late.
So, all in all, I think the kids deserve to go and it might be a turning point for the profile of KJT.

>Thanks Christina for the suggestion, but unfortunately while KIVA is absolutely wonderful, for US citizens there where only 2 US companies listed, and one of them was for California citizens only.Lots of European companies listed though, all sounded very encouraging. As for me, since I live on a fixed income (Social Security Disability), I did not qualify after listing my obligations, there was no way, at this time, to meet their requirements. But they 'are' wonderful. If I were up and running with my CREDWISH wish, we would be having a very different conversation.Haven't lost hope though. Thank you so much Christina,...... > > > Christina Jordan said:

Ben said of KJT's hopes and plans for travelling to Norway this summer:
While this is clearly unfair (and rather typical), I am suggesting to KJT that they consider all travel options/ports to reduce the (rather expensive) ticket price.
I wonder, does anyone know what the possibly cheaper options might be?
Also, with reference to the KKL team setting off for Scandanavia very shortly, there may well be scope for teams that can afford to travel to developed countries for an extended stay to earn money in games against other sides keen to play them. It's a shame that KJT are not only unable to do this, but very probably will miss out on competing in ths Norway Cup itself.
It should not be forgotten that KJT was invited to Norway because they had outstanding teams at the International tournament last year in Kenya, emphatically beating the current holders of the Norway Cup in the process.
So when Christina asks whether taking part in Norway is the best way to help the kids in the KJT who can't afford to go to school and who sometimes have to go all day without any food, it may seem a crazy way to spend very limited resources; but on the other hand, excelling at football is what the KJT does best and for many of their members it probably represents their best way out of poverty.

Rather typical of what Ben?
I don't quite understand why any org's success should be considered "clearly unfair" to others who are in earlier stages of organization. The Kids League is a much older and very well organized initiative, with a dedicated group of local staff and international volunteers who work year round to secure the corporate and other funding required to send their specially groomed and trained TKL international team (not the same as KKL) abroad as sports ambassadors from Uganda.
For many years now - just one example - they have ordered hundreds of banana fiber footballs with their logo on them from LiA to sell while they are abroad, as one of several ongoing and organized fundraisers that help make the trips happen on an annual basis. This summer, I know they will be playing in 4 tournaments in Sweden and one in Denmark (I actually wasn't aware they would be playing in Norway). The kids on the international TKL team also benefit from school fees and other kinds of long-term life-stabilizing assistance that TKL Foundation works very hard to procure for them, so that they are not traveling abroad as needy kids hoping someone will help them, but as proud representatives of Uganda's potential.
TKL has very strong systems in place for making these trips happen, that have been built over many painstaking years. TKL's founder (who left a successful career to work unpaid on this vision, by the way) is an Ashoka Fellow because of his success at developing those systems. They have also faced MANY struggles as an org, and certainly did not start out with the ability to send a special team abroad... that came only after the KKL had already achieved a good measure of sustainable success in sourcing corporate team sponsorships locally. It pains me greatly to read that after so many years of very hard work to advance youth sports in Uganda, TKL's success should be derided in any way because of what others in earlier stages have not been able to achieve yet. Perhaps it could be constructive to look more carefully at HOW that success has been achieved and learn from it, rather than dismiss it as "unfair."
That aside (and sorry for the rant), I do thank you for clarifying your impressions of how the trip to Norway fits into the KJT strategy. Whether or not the trip happens this year, my sincere hope for KJT is that they will eventually be able to start making long term plans that include raising an annual travel budget to facilitate the dream.

Thank You Ben, Christina and David for your contribution But for Heavenly sake i kindly request you not to mix up things more so with Youth football academies in Uganda i would appreciate any discussion which does not comparing or looking at the difference of the Organizations.
The Purpose of writing To CREDWISH was to find ways of how KJT can go to Norway cup, other than that I would love to talk anything outside KJT if so i request David we can revise the first Discussion.

I'd like to start by introducing a very big problem that needs to be solved in a very short space of time.
The Kampala Junior Team (KJT) seeks to develop the talents of orphans and street kids in Uganda. It began as a soccer team but it has developed a much wider programme of activities for inspiring and developing the potential of young people in Kampala to enrich their lives and acquire skills to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
However, its greatest successes to date have all involved their soccer teams. KJT runs extremely successful girls and boys teams of all ages.
Indeed the Credwish I'm introducing is in essence a problem of their success. For having won a string of international competitions in Africa, they have been invited to compete in the prestigious Norway Cup in Scandanavia this July.
I thought that this was a dream too far for the KJT, since the cost of getting them there and providing for all their expenses looked like it may be in the region of $45,000.
But they've been working away at the problems and now have funding for everything except 9 airplane tickets to Norway. Kayiwa Fred tells me the cost of each ticket is $1070. That makes a total cost of almost $10,000.
Perhaps he will post more about this here.
Anyway the Credwish is this: how can the KJT secure their dream of playing in this international tournament? There are only two or three weeks left to come up with a solution.
For the children that get the chance to travel to a tournament of this kind, it can be a life-changing experience. More particularly, it can showcase to the world the remarkable talents of these kids. Not only do they have a good chance of winning the Cup, but the individual talent of their players could attract the attention of professional teams from across the world and potentially this could transform what the KJT can do for its members.
So a lot hangs on raising this seemingly impossible sum of money. Can it still be done? The KJT has come a long way already. It needs some help to get it across this final hurdle.
