what kind of service would you suggest, Ben?
I posted on a similar subject on the collaboration thread, but here are a few things which could work (and in a bit more detail, than on the other thread)
- A free NED email address
- An email response service - this would involve contacting of people by mobile, if they are unable to reach their email account regularly, if important-looking emails show up. This would cost, naturally, but would likely be cheaper than a Blackberry or a frequent trip to the cybercafé.
- A national PC buying service, through the likes of ComputerAid. The web-site could be a portal for any social entrepreneurs who wish to benefit from PC bulk purchase of recycled PCs, even though their volume needs are low, but are not time-pressured on the receipt of those PCs and are prepared to pay up front, to save substantial money.
- A free or cheap "self-build" web hosting service
- A space for collaborating for joint IFAT membership or other trade association
- A space for collaborating for export logistics
- A space for collaborating for crop-farming (or other products, such as candles), since many buyers require larger volumes than can be supplied by smaller projects
- A space to collaborate for joint bids for funding, as often funders - let's take DFID for example - will end up utilising large and expensive charities to deliver projects, rather than indigenous NGOs, to minimise their own admin costs
- A space to post new funding opportunities, by country/continent
- A space for sharing success for rapid continent expansion. For instance, unique new technologies or concepts designed for social good should be shared for the public good, if they are to reach their public the most quickly. If one has a vision for a wonderful new concept, then one does not have to be the one that implements it everywhere - there is great satsifaction in seeing others grab and run with your idea, whilst you as a creative entrepreneur move onto your next brainchild. I appreciate not every social entrepreneur thinks this way and some only ever have one great idea, but the option is there.
The above relates not just to Ashoka fellows, but to anyone with a social entrepreneurial spirit. An "Ashoka only" service would run contrary to the spirit of Ashoka and NED imho.
Hopefully others can add to the above...
