Apply here to attend the Global Social Benefit Incubator at Santa Clara University August 19-31 on a FULL scholarship valued at US $20,000.

The Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBI), a program developed by Santa Clara University’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society, assists social benefit entrepreneurs in developing “business plans” that enable their organizations to reach increasing numbers of beneficiaries.

The GSBI consists of three major components:

  1. An on-line, mentored, application process hosted on Social Edge and based on three business planning exercises designed to benefit all who participate
  2. An in-residence summer program that involves “action learning” and mentoring to prepare a sustainable plan for the organization
  3. On-going mentoring and collaboration for all who participate in the first two components.

I don't quite understand what sort of people they are aiming for. Any views?

In regards to the type of people who apply to the GSBI, it is social entrepreneurs from around the world who are launching or scaling a social venture. You can check out interviews with past GSBI participants on Social Edge at www.socialedge.org/blogs/global-x

GSBI Class of 2007 included entrepreneurs from a wide range organizations (described in a pdf document available at the GSBI site): www.Afriafya.org, www.buildchange.org, www.cwdr.org.in, www.cleangold.com, www.dasra.org, www.ruralafrwadp.org, www.bewellworkbetter.com, www.thrive.in, www.videovolunteers.org, www.1298.org.in, www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za, www.ideas-at-work.org, www.geekcorps.org, www.uvaquastar.com, www.nishantbioenergy.org, www.pumpaid.org

In the past, participants have come from Costa Rica, India, Namibia, the Philippines, Rwanda, Argentina, Cambodia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Bangladesh, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Canada, and the United States.

Matt Flannery, Founder of Kiva, the online global microlending venture, attended GSBI in 2006 and said about the experience: "The GSBI was especially helpful to me since up until that point, I had been isolated and working in a vacuum. This was the first time I was surrounded by people who supported my project. Through the GSBI I made trusted connections with people across the world. I now work with one of the GSBI participants I met there and have partnered with another."

Thanks Jill, for posting the additional info.

The GSBI sounds like it would be a very worthwhile program, for people who are at the appropriate stage in developing their idea(s).
