Getting Ready for cosi10: What to do

Sent by email on 3 Nov

Hello cosi10 participants!

I have a couple of action points for you today.

1. Please join the cosi10 event space before Friday. If you are receiving this, then you have should have also received an invitation to join the cosi10 group at ned.com

Your invitation to the group will expire 7 days from now. You must join ned.com and accept the invitation to join the group space in order to do anything there. Join http://ned.com with your registered cosi10 email address & log in Click on "My Ned.com" to find your way to the cosi10 group home page, or come back here and click on http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ Scroll down on the cosi10 group homepage until you see a green link to JOIN the group. Click on it. You are encouraged to remain logged in to ned and have your computer nearby throughout the duration of the cosi10 weekend.

  1. Please upload your presentation links by Friday

Once you have joined ned.com AND joined the cosi10 group space, you'll need to add yourself to the List of Presenters by 22:00 GMT on Friday, 5 November (24:00 Nicosia | 23:00 Brussels | 5pm Chicago | 4pm Denver)

Go to http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ ws/presentations/ for all further instructions, including some thoughts on why YOU should present.

  1. Explore who's coming!

I am brimming with ideas and introductions I want to make after taking a tour of the profiles of cosi10 Europe participants yesterday. I've shared a roundup of who we are so far at http://cosi10.com/2010/11/whos-c oming-to-cosi10-europe-hubbrusse ls/.

The most up-to-date lists of participants at all cosi10 events that are on for this weekend can be explored at the links below (remember to scroll down on each of these pages).

Also invited to the cosi10 online space (so far) are folks who thought about hosting events in different parts of the world, and folks who were registered at cosi10 events that cancelled.

This weekend's event participants will receive a final communication from your cosi10 host before your event starts this weekend, confirming final logistical details. Otherwise, the next communication you receive from me will be early Saturday morning in a message to cosi10 group members at ned.com.

Looking forward to seeing you online soon!

Christina

P.S. - I'm GIVING AWAY POINTS to people who introduce themselves in the Welcome discussion at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ news/1/ by Friday! If I run out of points I will owe them to you :-)

P.S.S. - As promised, there is also a discussion where you can ask questions about ned.com at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ news/0/

Getting Ready for cosi10: What to prepare for

Sent by email on 1 Nov

Dear cosi10 participants,

cosi10 is just around the corner! Hopefully by now you've received a note from your event host introducing the event programme: http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ ws/eventsprogram/.

I wanted to write today to introduce you to a 2 more key elements of the programme. You will also receive a follow-up e-mail on Wednesday with some instructions and action steps.

  1. Our online event space & the ned.com points system

Ned.com is an online co-working space for social ventures where we will be sharing information about what happens at the cosi10 events & meetups around the world. The space is publicly viewable, but only cosi10 participants (and some additional networking allies we'll all invite) can create content in the cosi10 group. Once our face to face workshops are over, we will continue to use the cosi10 space at ned to collaborate and connect, with global participants and with each other through mid December.

While there are many tools we could have chosen to use for sharing cosi10 content, one main reason we chose to use ned.com is the feedback points system.

You will accrue points for participating in the online event space, and for receiving positive feedback from others on what you post. A unique algorithm in the software also ensures that the more feedback points you invest in content and other participants over the next 6 weeks (in the cosi10 group or anywhere else on ned), the more quickly you earn points into your bank.

In mid December we will have a cosi10 online finale event, where you will be invited to evaluate and invest the points you have in your ned.com bank at that time in your favorite proposals from:

  • finalists in the crowd-sourced funding campaign,
  • joint initiatives that some of you will propose to undertake together, and
  • people you've nominated for cosi10 collaborator of the year.

Those proposals who receive the most feedback points during the online event will receive awards from the pool of funds we have all managed to raise together in a joint cosi10 network effort by then. You will be able to invest in your own ventures in December, so participating in the cosi10 group online to earn more points is highly encouraged!

There will also be plenty of non-monetary benefits to participating in the cosi10 online event space - keep reading below!

The main page for the online event space is at: http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ You will receive your invitation to join the event space on Wednesday. In case you have comments or questions about how/why we are using ned.com feedback points, the link to a cosi10 group discussion about that will be included in Wednesday’s email.

  1. Your presentation: Why does my innovation matter?

If you would like to present your venture to the cosi10 crowd for some tailored advice, connections, non-monetary support, and maybe even some of the funding we all manage to raise, please start preparing a 5 minute presentation using your favorite online presentation tool. http://prezi.com and http://slideshare.com are great ones to check out. Googledocs also allows you to create simple slides.

You will receive further instructions on Wednesday for where and how to post your presentation link. The link to your presentation should be posted to the online event space by FRIDAY, 5 NOV.

Your presentation topic is "Why Does my Innovation Matter?"

In your presentation please briefly share information about your venture's current & potential social impact. Below are some suggested talking points:

  • what social impact you are trying to achieve? Why? For whom?
  • how you are going about it?
  • what's innovative about your approach?
  • what's solid about your model?
  • what would the sustainable growth of your venture mean?
  • what non-monetary assistance do you need most right now?

Please feel free to contact your local event host with questions you might have about your presentations, or anything else at all related to the event you are attending. If you’ve already joined ned.com, please log in and contact us through our profiles links below:

  • cosi10 Europe in Brussels, Belgium - Christina Jordan
  • cosi10 USA in Chicago - Jean Russell
  • cosi10 USA in Denver - Matt Nathan
  • cosi10 India in New Delhi - Pallavi Keshri
  • cosi10 Mediterranean in Nicosia (Cyprus) - George Isaias

See you again on Wednesday, and thanks again for your passion for social innovation!

Warmly,

Christina

Getting Ready for cosi10: the Event Programme

Sent by email on 29 Oct

Hello from Brussels!

We're so looking forward to seeing you at Connecting Social Innovation 2010 next weekend, Nov 6-7 at Hub Brussels. A group of us who actively support social entrepreneurs in different parts of the world have worked together internationally over the past several months, to develop a unique workshop program for you that we're really excited about.

As with any emerging social endeavour, developing cosi10 has been all about iteration - adjusting to our market, refining what we understand of people's needs, and sensing how our best abilities can uniquely serve to enable a high impact outcome. As you have undoubtedly experienced yourself, the innovation process can be exhilarating and also deeply challenging. The vision you start with is never the plan you end up with, but sticking close to the core mission while seeking the highest value for stakeholders is what moves things along from innovation to implementation. And here we are! A week away from implementation!

The cosi10 events will be more intimate than we originally planned. We have adjusted the program to fit that reality, and are surprised and delighted to realize that this actually brings more value to those of you attending. There will be more time for each participant to receive input on particular challenges you face; more time for all of us to learn from and help refine each others' business models; more time to connect with and reflect together on the cosi10 conversations happening in other parts of the world; and a cozy space in which to build the kind of deep relationships that can lead to effective collaboration.

Please take a moment to review the latest cosi10 program at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ ws/eventsprogram/ to get a better idea of what's in store for all of us next weekend. Once you've done that, let's get the conversation started!

Registered participants will receive an email on 1 November with next steps for getting ready for our gathering.

With warm regards from your cosi10 Europe facilitator ~

Christina

What is the Hub?

The Hub is an incubator for social innovation. It offers access to inspiring collaborative work and meeting spaces for entrepreneurs and people with imaginative ideas.

What's special about the cosi10 Europe event at The Hub?

The cosi10 Global Events Coordinator, Christina Jordan, is a Hub Brussels member and Board Member. Christina will open and close the cosi10 Europe event on behalf of both Hub Brussels and the cosi10 global planning team. We are expecting participants from Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, the UK and Africa.

Before diving into the workshops that are similarly structured at all cosi10 events, Hub Brussels member Leander Bindewald will set a cool backdrop for our time together by leading us in The Serious Funny Money Game that will show us how alternative currencies can work to support social innovation.
