Cosi10 : Connecting Social Innovation 2010: Workshops

Subsections

Core Workshop Guide

CORE OPENING: Global Wisdom Sharing

rough timing: 15-30 min, depending on number of participants

Objectives

Introduce interactivity to the gathering by asking everyone to share something they know, that's immediately posted to the cosi10 online event space.

Conversation Cues

  • Take 1-2 min to briefly introduce yourself & what you do, and
  • share one thing you have learned about pursuing social innovation.

Process Suggestions

Complete the circle, giving every participant 1-2 minutes to answer.

Follow up with reading aloud selected nuggets of wisdom that have already been shared in the global discussion at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ news/2/

Content Plan

A scribe opens the correct link below, notes down everyone's answers in a list, and saves it.

OpeningBrussels | OpeningChicago | OpeningDenver | OpeningNicosia

The lists feed for comparison into a global ongoing discussion at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ news/2/ .

CORE WORKSHOP: Impact Strategies

Rough Timing: 2.5 - 3 hours + 15 min content collaboration. For smaller groups & Meetups can be shortened to +/- 1.5 hours

Objectives

To engage social innovators in discussions about the IMPACT they are seeking: what they are doing to achieve which social good, how the impact they seek can connect, synergize and open opportunities for working with others, and how their abilities to create impact can be transferrable to larger global challenges.

Conversation Cues

  1. Who are we here and how would we like to achieve social impact, in which sector(s)?
  2. How does the impact we aim to achieve intersect or overlap with other sectors?
  3. How can we work together, within or across sectors, to strengthen the impact we're aiming to make?
  4. (OPTIONAL GROUP TASK) How transferable is the impact we know how to create?
If you were financially facilitated to work as a team to create an impact in the rebuilding of flood-affected Pakistan (using our knowledge, our ventures, our networks and our capabilities) what could our group do together?

Process Suggestions

Event posts - please share here later how you ran this session

Content Plan

Someone from the group writes a brief (no more than 3 paragraphs) summary response from the group to questions A, B and C and post it in your event's impact strategies workspace:

ImpactBrussels | ImpactChicago | ImpactDenver

Optional: Post a short write-up of your team's discussion about how you would create impact in Pakistan to the cosi10 for Pakistan discussion in a comment.

Ongoing discussion:
Participants are invited to respond to summaries and comments that have already been posted in the global Impact Strategies discussion at http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ news/3/

Process Suggestions

Open Space

Content Plan

Global public sharing of what is said during focus groups is 100% optional, and for the group to decide.

If your Challenges & Solutions group wishes to document & invite ongoing discussion around issues that came up for you:

  • Start a new group discussion with #cosi10 FOCUS: Your topic name in the title.
  • Use the discussion intro to share session notes and/or a written summary from what happened in your face-to-face session, and have your group develop questions to the larger cosi10 group that invite interaction.
  • post links to photos of your whiteboard notes in the discussion comments later.
Once you've saved your discussion intro
Please add the link to your discussion in the onlineeventmap so others will be sure to find it (ask for help on that if you get stuck!)

CORE WORKSHOP: Innovation Resourcing

Rough timing: 3-4 hours, several phases

http://cosi10.com/opportunities

Objectives

  • Give participants the opportunity to pitch their project publicly
  • Guide participants thru a process for selecting their favorites, who become eligible for cosi10 community crowdsourced funding
  • Encourage collaborative thinking around connecting, improving and refining the social venture models presented.

Process Suggestions

Phase 1: Pitch Session
Participants who have pre-submitted presentations have 5 minutes to present their venture to the other Workshop participants in answer to the question Why does your social innovation matter?
Phase 2: Business Build-up breakout sessions
Quickly schedule a round-robin of focus group time, allowing the crowd to self-select into small groups around each venture for 1/2 hour to discuss What can we help with in the next 30 days to take this plan to another level?
Phase 3: Local Evaluation & Selection process
Each venture has another 1-2 minutes to present a summary of their small group discussion. Each venture who has pitched receives an envelope; each participant is given 2 pennies (for hope). Participants are asked to "invest" their pennies (hope) in their favorites ventures. The top 1-2 ventures from each workshop with the most investment from their local cosi10 colleagues will be invited to participate in the cosi10 community crowdsourcing campaign, making them eligible to receive funding to be awarded by the cosi10 community in December.

Conversation Cues

Pitch Session:
Why does your social innovation matter?
Business Build-up Focus:
What can we help with in the next 30 days to take this plan to another level?
Evaluation:
Which of the ventures you've heard about do you want to invest your hope in?

Content Plan

Pre-event: Everyone (optional)
Add yourself to the List of Presenters on the Presentations page
Post-event: Presenters (optional)
Start a new discussion in the cosi10 group. In the discussion intro share a summary of what happened in your Business-Build up session. Let the cosi10 community briefly know which kind of contacts and opportunities you are now seeking, and why. Including the link to your presentation is optional. Please add your discussion to the OnlineEventMap after you've saved the discussion intro, so other participants will find it.
Post-event: Favorites
The selected favorites from each event will receive additional instructions for creating discussions and workspaces dedicated to their social venture in the cosi10 Online space, whose interactive content will fuel their success in the crowdsourced funding campaign & awards.

Topical Workshops

2 hour workshops around host defined topics http://www.ned.com/group/cosi10/ ws/specialsessions/

  • 15-20 min of collaborative content creation around the workshop topic to launch a global discussion

Objective

Capture workshop content for launching a topical conversation in the cosi10 community.

Content plan

The topical workshop from each face to face event should result in the launch of a global discussion about that topic, that participants from other events and cosi10 meetups will be invited to connect around.

A new discussion should be started in the event space entitled #cosi10 TOPIC: Our topical workshop name. Please use the wording that is already used in the SpecialSessions workspace.

The introductory text to the discussion thread should include, for example:

  • a very brief (1 paragraph) description of what you did in your workshop
  • key learnings shared by participants, and
  • questions for further discussion.

Please post the link to your discussion in the SpecialSessions workspace, below the description.

Conversation Cues

  • What are our key takeaways from this session?
  • What questions do we want to ask about this topic of the cosi10 international community (including cosi10 Meetups who might wish to connect around this topic)?

Process Suggestions

If you have a process planned for capturing crowdsourced content for launching your discussion in the cosi10 international space, please describe it for others to learn from.

Idea 1 (from Christina in Brussels)

Let participants know at the beginning of the special session that they will have a cosi10 collaboration task to complete together at the end.

Go around the circle to capture takeaways. Use a whiteboard to brainstorm on questions to ask of the international network.

Idea 2 (from you in your city)

  • please describe your process steps here
