Please distribute widely!
The Global Peace Tiles Project (www.peacetiles.net) is seeking partners for our 2008 World AIDS Day mural project. The aim of the initiative is to foster self-expression, health education, and public awareness around the global pandemic through visual arts through as many workshops and mural exhibitions as we can muster.
In 2008 we're looking to expand our global network by inviting local partners in community-based organizations working in the areas of education, health, social services and the arts to host creativity workshops that provide a forum for youth expression and learning around HIV/AIDS. In particular we're promoting workshops around:
- Positive self-imagery
- Healthy sexuality
- Living with HIV/AIDS
- Ending discrimination
- and other themes that relate to local dimensions of the pandemic.
Peace Tiles (mixed media collages on wood panel) can be used locally or contributed to international murals that will be exhibited in public spaces around the world on World AIDS Day. In addition to providing children and youth an opportunity to express their feelings and experiences (their "visual voice"), Peace Tiles workshops are a great way to raise funds for local AIDS prevention and services.
Our tentative schedule of key dates include:
- Expressions of interest - Accepted through June 1
- Peace Tiles workshops (for international murals) - Through August 15
- Receipt of Peace Tiles (for international murals) - By October 15
- Local workshops - Through December 1
- International mural exhibitions and special events - December 1
The Global Peace Tiles project will be raising funds to provide small grants (our "microgrants" program) to local organizations to assist with the costs of hosting workshops and shipping tiles. We also provide a range of planning tools to help local organizations design and lead successful creativity workshops.
For more information write to peacetiles@gmail.com or visit us on the web at http://www.peacetiles.net
Thank you!

Okay, so some things have happened that have shifted the territory I'm able to tread this year for World AIDS Day. But yes, I'm still planning to play a small part in brightening the spotlight on HIV/AIDS around the world, and hope you can too.
First, thanks to Meron for the kick in the @$$ to get back in the shop and cut some wood. It was nice, like seeing an old friend. Since starting my new job in mid-July, its been hard to put enough focus on this, which I resent only mildly.
Second, I've chucked the whole peacetiles.net thing - why bother. For the foreseeable future peacetiles.net will be a straight forward "presentation" site where folks can learn about the project in a straight forward way, and any organizing that happens will be either here or on Facebook.
(Feedback welcome: http://www.peacetiles.net - its a work in progress)
Third, I'd love to help local groups get tiling. Its fun (I think) and a great way to involve people young and old in exploring sometimes tough issues. Its alot easier to talk about "art" than ourselves sometimes. So lets start there! Discussion kits etc available online. Always looking for ways to improve, and make them relevant to different audiences. I can provide "kits" in limited quantities, and try and match your group up with interested groups elsewhere. Maybe I'll have some luck fundraising too, and get push those resources outward.
Or, better yet, host your own fundraiser using a "Create-A-Thon" - make a mural while raising money to donate to an AIDS charity of your choice - cool!
Fourth, why did the chicken cross the road, according to Hillary Clinton?
Fifth, we've got some great interest in tiles already for 2008, including Kiwanuka Mulindwa in Uganda, Fre van Bree in South Africa, the Concern for the Future Foundation in Uganda... and looking to grow!
Six, well, that little chicken crossed the road because the whole village helped that chicken get across that road.
That's all for now.

Peace Tiles are often in my mind, I think they're a great idea :) By which I mean I would like to set up a local project, but I don't want to commit myself immediately to it in case I overload myself! Where are the online discussion kits, btw, I looked but couldn't find.. that would be the first step for me, thinking about the issues that could be covered and finding particular aspects or approaches that could be easily woven into local groups, made relevant to local concerns, etc.
It would be great to collaborate with the KJT kids on this!

Right on, Ceris - let me know how I can help. I'll get the downloadable resources up today!
GAYLE - Help! Two inquiries from Oz, one from Nikola Adam who is interested in getting suited up (aka trained) in tiles, and another (Beth Sometimes) who runs something really neat-o called Ngapartji Ngapartji - check it out at http://www.ngapartji.org/
Any chance you could ping them as a "local" booster at any level you're comfortable?
Cheers,
lars

I joined the workspace :)
The more I think of getting together a Peace Tiles workshop the more I think I'll enjoy it!
Here's what I'll do - I'll sound out the idea with creatively-minded friends (two in particular, Ruth and Andy, who've run similarly creative projects), local youth workers, the Tyddyn Bach Trust http://www.tyddynbachtrust.org.u k/ and anyone else I can think of. Hopefully by next weekend I'll have aroused enough interest (and offers of help!) to commit to a workshop or two.
I'm thinking a session or two at each of 3 local youth clubs and/or an open-to-all one day workshop. Then I guess there'd be a day for setting up the display. Is that the right kind of time frame ?
p.s. I like the Peace Tiles video :)

I have aroused a little interest locally, I have met (most fortuitously :)) an artist who has just moved to my village and seems very interested in the Peace Tiles concept, and everyone I have mentioned it to seems to like the idea although no-one has actually promised their involvement yet. I still need to speak to the people at the Tyddyn Bach Trust and to the youth workers.
Lars, I hate to hassle but are the downloadable resource packs ready to roll?

Thanks Lars, I think they're great! I particularly like the "my place in the world" resource, that fits in so well with helping the KJT find a permanent home :)Looks like this plan might be coming together, the ingredients are falling into place (at least in my mind!)

Sorry to say that due to my workload having suddenly increased I'm going to have to postpone the Peace Tiles project until after Christmas, whilst still bearing it very much in mind for the new year - it would be a great way to launch the Worldwide Connectory in my area when the time comes!
