Adult Life is a new program idea that addresses some of the needs that I personally have witnessed in the LiA communities. Though the desire for these activities wasn't articulated by the community, when the program idea was explained to the Kampala community a few days ago they burst into ululation and applause.

Basically, Adult Life encourages adult members of Life in Africa to develop their talents and passions. Proposed activities include:

Basic English, literacy and numeracy training

Community learning activities and events

Local & global action campaigns

Music, dance & drama

For the literacy training (a big winner with the community) we will need to recruit volunteers who I would hope would stay for a significant period of time (up to one year) to offer stable course instruction. As many of you know, we've had a real mixed bag of experiences with volunteers in the past that point to the need for a more diligent and selective application and screening process.

Any further ideas on volunteer recruitment for this program would be greatly appreciated. I am wondering what folks would think about continuing the HDC2 fund for sponsoring volunteers from developing countries that David Bale started, particularly in the context of the Adult Life program.

While the last two activities on the list don't cost very much, the community learning activities and events that members have loved participating in over the past 2 years are a big ticket item that we need to figure out funding for. We can do dropcash style fundraising to help cover the costs of each event planned in advance, or we can try to raise a budget that covers funding for periodic events to be held during a 1-2 year period.

Comments from the community and global supporters welcome on this. Many thanks in advance for your thought time :)

Hi Christiner, i think it's a good idea to get these members feel that they can have life in a way that their body can do some thing to see that they feel young again. Even to help some of them get their talents back on track again and also help others discover theirs. If there is any way that we can continue the HDC2 fund for developing contries that David Bale started. Particularly in the context of the Adult life program as you hve put it, I think it's fine.

Understand that I think the intent of these adult programs is awesome. I even believe that they could be accomplished by using the internet and not necessarily having face to face volunteers in the long term. I am afraid I don't know the kind of people who can volunteer in a foreign country for a year at a time. I am sure they are there but I think they are a rare gem.

That said - this is just my opinion regarding the HDC^2 funds:

Those funds were set up to help allow people in developing countries who might have some training or experience but no employment to be able to afford to help in other developing countries. This is a very, VERY different concept here and I would not be happy with changing the intent of these funds.

I think the community in Gulu had really developed some very good programs for the community , which was really doeable even with very little funds. They would search for some specific topics and come and teach the community their findings. I think if this can be continued as for now, it will be a good beginning.

And there are also some literate members among us who can for the meantime begin the reading and writing skills without so much funds. I know there's need for some stationaries , but if we can start on the resource that is available for now(teachers) that will also be great. I know we need alot more than this , we need people of different backgrounds to help develop this., thus the need for volunteers from other parts of the world.

The dance and drama bit of it , looks a lot easier than all the above because it's mainly the physical bit that we need to do ourselves, that's what we need to bank on for the start. I know we shall need instruments and possibly costumes for it to work well , but if we could start just as we are and all these find us on the way, we would have walked avery long way.

Maybe when we are trying to plan all these, we shall be very grateful for advice on how to handle a particular program and the people who would be willing to help develop this as volunteers from both within and without are most welcomed. Feel free and give us comments on how best this can be worked out with the few resources that we have at hand for the moment while we continue to look for ways and funds to make it better.

Thank you very much Gulu for putting this into action, I knew something small can be started with the little resources that you people are having . I am very happy with the two teachers who have volunteered to get this moving, such are the community heart that we should all be having. So Kireka i think it's high time something similar also gets running.

Here Cris, i have just copied this from a post on the hello Gulu , hello Kireka thread. Francis has tried to describe what the program looks like. The program has started in Gulu

Francis said:

Hullo nedsters and LiA members,we have now started with the Adult Iliteracy Education programm(Learning) last friday with 12members who attended.we have two professioal teachers(tutors) from christ the king PTC,one of the primary teachers training college in Gulu-Uganda,they are really devoted volunteers helping our community. Its just the beginig i know many will still join the rest.We have decided to start the learning due to the civil war which prevailed in the region for the last 21years leadindg to total poverty for our population, and so many could not afford for school fees. And know since we are seeing relative peace,we want them to learn the basis of education ,ie writing, reading, speaking and calcular(geometry)plus social aspect of life. And we hope they will go out and fit in the morden society very well.Give your input please.
