Amasiko Community Based Eco-Camp is an initiative of Masiko Youth Care Association. This association was started by a group of orphans, their caretaker, Wilfried van der Veen and some wellwishers. Their aim is to start a training centre for destitute youth in sustainable agriculture, tourism and other income generating activities and support the trainees to become self reliant small scale entrepreneurs. A piece of land is acquired at lake Bunyonyi, for construction of a training site and for the development of some ecological sound accomodation for income gerating through eco-tourism to earn the required operational costs for the training centre. One activity will be training in small scale semi intensive chicken rearing: Our small grant application can be found under: http://www.ned.com/group/lia-glo bal/ws/amasiko_small_grants_appl ication/

There has been some progress. The group has build a local chicken house with advice of a local animal husbandry officer. It is not ideal, but for the moment it will serve the the purpose and I do not (yet) want to interfere, but learn for myself how the group will be assisted by the AH Officer. So far the members have donated 5 local chicken. The District Veterinary Officer promised me to give an improved cock for breeding. I have to see him when I am back from Kotido.

Your proposal looks great Wilfried.
I was there when your local community decided they wanted to engage in chicken rearing - has the community organized themselves to move forward on that at all yet?
