Grace Aaya has worked for and with the members of Life in Africa in Uganda for the last 6 years. She is one of the most giving and caring women I know and she is loved by all of the women in the Acholi Quarters.

Grace, a war widow herself, has also taken in orphans and raised them as her own. So far she has raised 10 children. The people of her village and the women of the Acholi Quarters know her to be the kind of person who will share what little she has with anyone she sees in need.

But now Grace needs our help. Her youngest daughter, who is almost 13, is critically ill. She has an enlarged spleen caused by recurring bouts of malaria, an umbilical hernia that is causing much distress and most serious, her appendix is inflamed and the doctors fear the appendix will burst if surgery is not done right away. In Uganda, if the appendix bursts it is almost certain death.

The medical bills over the last few months have totally exhausted the meager funds that Grace had. She has frantically been trying to find funds for the operation that will save this child's life but cannot. As a mother, I cannot imagine anything worse that watching your child suffer and being helpless to save them.

I am asking all the friends and supporters of Life in Africa to help save this child's life by donating what you can. If enough of us donate even a little, we can raise this money very quickly. I am also asking you to pass this on to all your friends and contacts. The more people we reach, the faster we can save this child and time is critical.

Thank you so much for your support. I know Grace thanks you too.

I am hoping that some of you can help by passing this link on to your friends and contacts. A lot of you use Facebook a lot and anything you can do will really be appreciated.

Grace is such a wonderful giving person and I know she is a valued member of ned. It breaks my heart to see her going through such an ordeal.

Thank you all so much for anything you can do to help.

I put a link to my blog on facebook--chipin and facebook don't play well together. :( But the chipin is on my blog.

Hey it looks like we already pulled in $280! Be sure to let me know who donated so I can thank them. (I think it lists donors on the chipin manager somewhere.)

Actually we are over $300 ($305 to be exact) Linda Nowakowski was kind enough to send an echeck which doesn't show in the chip in. Thank you so much Linda! In addition to me and You we also received donations from Pam Omidyar and Ashley Adamson.

I have sent out a ton of emails and am hopeful that this evening and tomorrow will be great.

Thank you to everyone who is helping to promote this.

This is really what community is all about.

I kind of copied Shawn's Facebook notice and modified it sending people to her blog. The son of one of my high school friend's challenged his friends to act. Will be interesting to see if they do.

Wow, thank you Linda. What a great idea. I just collected from some of my neighbors and raised another $25 in person. With Linda's echeck that makes us at $450. Fantastic.

Sally Duros has reposted this thread on Facebook (thanks so much Sally).

I also sent an inbox message on facebook to a list of folks who've met or worked with Grace over the years and asked them to join us in helping Grace get through this.

Cynthia Gentry just showed her support on facebook, and set a good reminder of an example by giving points to this thread. I had forgotten! More points from the rest of you here will give it maximum visibility on the homepage at ned.

thank you so much Cynthia

So sorry to hear about this Grace, my thoughts are with you and your family. I will help out when I get back to the US and can get a good online connection. Thinking of nothing but the best.

I've added another $20, but it hasn't shown up yet in the Chipin total. On my screen, that total now reads as $500.

It's no surprise to find that so many people are thinking about Grace, her daughter and her family, but it is very good that they are!

Thanks Evvy for alerting us to this and for explaining the situation so clearly. I hope all will now go well for Grace.

Good suggestion from Christina re visibility points. It should be on the top of Ned's front page very shortly.

It is 5:30 am here and this is a wonderful way to start my day. Thank you all so much for all your caring, support and donations. I think we will reach our goal by end of day.

Grace is just in awe over this outpouring of love and she is so relieved.

I am thrilled that people are responding so quickly. I wish I could do more, but I'm one of the millions of unemployed Americans.

Got a tiny bit of twitter buzz going, but the people I'm connected to there really don't know Grace or I very well - I'm not seeing the chipin change at all after 7 related tweets from me and 3 re-tweets by @PamO @SOLVEcoop and @ayllu.

I am happy to be doing this. Thank you so much Evvy, for setting this page up.

Peter, make sure Grace gets Judith to the hospital as soon as possible.

Evvy, maybe Peter could help by picking up the money instead of making Grace do that.

I couldn't get to Chip In from home, but I got there from work, finally. I left a message to Grace but then realized it will go to the coordinator and that probably isn't Grace. So, God Bless You Grace. You are in my prayers. You are an old friend.

Fingers crossed for a successful operation. Best wishes to Grace, Peter and most of all Judith.

If more medical treatment is need afterwards, then please don't hesitate to ask for more support.

Please keep us updated of how Judith is.
