What goes where on ned.com: (I've just sent the following message to Life in Africa's Ugandan community members who are also members at ned. Posting it here for reference.)

Dear LiA (Uganda) members -

Over the past few months as we've been redefining Life in Africa structures AND moving away from Onet AND resettling into a new online home here at ned, our online communications have been a bit disorganized. It's time to get organized!

In answer to some of your recent questions about what to post where, I'm proposing the following new protocol for all of us to follow:

There is now a new group called Life in Africa - Global. This group is for keeping each other and our global supporters updated about what's happening at Life in Africa on the ground.

All LiA members in Uganda are invited to contribute; program managers and reporters will have specific instructions on posting to specific threads once they are appointed. Loans editing, program planning discussions and progress reports will take place in this group. As in the past, there will be an operations thread for communication between Gulu and Kireka that you should all put on your watchlist.

The Life in Africa USA group is for discussing our online and US-based marketing, distribution and fundraising strategies, including the Life in Africa Ambassadors and School Fundraising programs. We'll also use this group to explore how we should use some of the new websites out there that can be useful in the Life in Africa context.

All of you are welcome to join and participate in this group to learn about and contribute to Life in Africa's global marketing strategies. New program ideas and requests for what you may need in addition to Life in Africa's programs, however, should NOT be posted in that group any longer.

The NedUganda group is like your veranda. Here you may post anything related to Uganda, including new project ideas (esp group projects) that come from any Ugandan members of ned.com.

If you post an idea that gets support from within the nedUganda group, there may also be opportunities (through ned) to raise funds for implementing that idea in Uganda. The specific procedures for qualifying to raise funds are yet to be established. Your views on that subject are required at the discussion link below.

Please note that Life in Africa USA and/or Life in Africa Uganda may play a future role in disbursing and monitoring funds on the ned community's behalf, but will not play a leading role in raising the funds for or implementing new project ideas that you propose in the NedUganda group. You will all really need to work as a team on nurturing your relationships with folks in the ned community, in order for the community financing aspect to take off and gain momentum.

To clarify - we had previously announced that Grace Ayaa was not eligible for nomination since she would serve as Vice Chairman on both CBO boards, ensuring consistent representation of Life in Africa Foundation in both structures. Grace was sick the day elections took place in Kampala - the community decided they wanted to elect her chairman anyway.

Grace and I both think it best for the sake of clarity all around that her role be the same at both Centers. Peter's suggestion is that all the officers elected in Kampala make the decision on how to reorganize themselves together. Those people are:

The question of free internet access for members has been raised - particularly during the month of December as we have reduced down to a skeleton staff and are in waiting mode for new programs in 2008. I'm wondering if there are suggestions from both centers about how to work this out.

One suggestion was that you could have an hour of free internet time as long as you used some of that time to do one thing with Life in Africa online (perhaps here at Ned and/or on Razoo or facebook). There may be other suggestions from you all on how to regulate free internet time for members. And we need to think through the timing as well - should free access for members be available during certain hours only? Let's discuss this here.

As christina has said before,

We have actually decided that the roles be changed and I have the same for both centers. So Peter will take on the Chairpersonship and I will be the vice as was thought before. Jesca then takes on Peter's elected role of Treasurer and all the others will remain in their positions as elected before, we are still going to wait for members sitting again to have the representatives for Gulu from kampala.

Peter, Congrats and all the best in this new endevours!

Thanks for the information Grace.

Yesterday we had a meeting and discussed all that was necessary but the issues of OPOK came in and one of the members suggested that the money be paid so as she could use it to pay for her loan and that became the main issue as so a committee was formed and the defaulters would be taken on later today.

More info to come as we wait for the results today form the committee moving to their homes.

Morris was needed too but He could not be found but this was not amain issue.

Iam done with typing the constitution and its attarched at the liafounders at uyahoo.groups.

Yesterday's meeting with the mothers there was the issue of water taps which was supposed to benefit members in their communities.This issue was raised and the members are waiting for the feedback.

The loan committee resumes tomorrow for their work in the villages and perhaps by friday much would have been done to recover the loan.

Munnu can you please check with George on the status of the water tap issue? Last time I brought it up (at the transition meetings) he said he was working on it. I've never heard anything since then.

There are four areas which the taps would be located. This will be in the areas of four divisions.

One tap would be in layibi...

The second in Industrial area where members are very many located at Otii Gino's Place

The third would be in Bar-dege

And the last one In Laroo possibly.

But this would depend on the cost on having it fixed in the areas or if its abit cheaper,then more of the taps would be allocated in the concentrated areas.I mean the areas where there are many members.

I am also sure that what was remaining was the budget for both centers , here in Kampala, George Kilama was supposed to work with the ladies to come up with the location and the budget , and in Gulu George Ovola was the one in charge and as there has not been any feedback from both centers, We thought it was still being worked on.So maybe what we should talk about now is the budget according to the availability of the funds( 500,000/= for each center).Please let the members have this done and am sure there will be way forward from there.

Hello Gulu - please be informed that Evvy and I will be tentatively visiting Gulu (with my niece and nephew) Jan 11-14, arriving around lunchtime on the 11th and leaving early on the 15th.

We hope to spend Fri afternoon, Saturday and Monday with members at the WE Center.

Evvy would like to offer an earring making workshop to the craftmakers (she has brought supplies)

Megan and Aaron (my 14 yrs niece and 13 yrs nephew) would like to join the children in some activities. They have brought some new art supplies

Internet4Change & Click4Africa training @ Kampala and Gulu

As discussed in meetings with the CBO boards of both centers, I am offering 2 internet training workshops at each center before I leave to Thailand on 6 Feb.

Click4Africa

This course will introduce ways for beginners to participate in earning internet time for your center by participating in specific activities online. All members who have email addresses and accounts open at facebook and ned.com are qualified to attend. This course will be perfect for beginners, but they will have to have active email, ned and facebook accounts opened in order to begin.

The Click4Africa course will consist of 3 x 1.5 hours of lecture time plus assignments. Participants should schedule an additional 1 hour of connected time each per lecture (outside of the lecture time) to complete assignments.

Please sign up no more than 3 people per computer for this course.

Internet4Change 2008

This course will discuss formats for member profiles and online proposal / reporting content that can be created to serve your community via the Life in Africa WE Network online.

Members with the skills and potential to serve as online proposal champions for the community should attend, as should those who would like to participate in the verification and monitoring of online-funded initiatives at LiA (and other) CBOs in Uganda on behalf of online project supporters.

Active email, facebook, ned.com and flickr.com accounts are required.
Participants should also pre-arrange an interview with 1 community member immediately following the first course meeting, (not another trainee) whose profile they will work on building as an assignment.

Please sign up no more than 2 people per connected computer for this 3 part course. Each part will include a 1.5 hour lecture and practical assignments. Participants should expect to spend an additional 2.5 - 3 hours on assignments after every course meeting.

Yes - one member may participate in both courses.

Thats` so good Evvy, I for myself used to have such a problem but I tried to overcome it by being always on ned and reading properly what has been posted before wring any thing.

Your advice has come at the right time when we have just trained over 15 youths for Click 4 Africa. The training was facilitated by Christina at Gulu We center. I thas given a lot of Encouragements and skills in exploring the online Global connection networks.

I wanted to pop on here briefly and make a comment. The people have to make a commitment to get on. They have to make a commitment to read. They have to get up the courage to write something. As has been said before, don't worry about the spelling, punctuation grammar etc. Just try to communicate what is in your head and heart. I would suggest a good place to start is to introduce yourself here.

Another thing that would be nice is to write up something interesting about yourself and post it on your profile. Maybe even include a picture! (if you need help use the help files).

Start to look around and find things here that interest you. click on the groups link at the top of the page. That will take you to a list of the most active groups. See if anything looks interesting. Go read what has been posted in the group. Look at the all groups tab for other groups. If you find a discussion interesting but have nothing to add yet, introduce yourself in the thread and say you think the conversation is interesting and you are following it even if you are not contributing. If you don't understand something..... ASK A QUESTION!

If you find someone who says things that make you feel like you think alike, give them feed back points and that way you will have them on a list of people that are easy to "follow around". If you are on the "my ned" page and you click on top activity, you will see the posts of the people that you have given points to. At the top of that list you will see a box called "Feedback threshold:" You can set that to what ever number you are interested in. I give a lot of 1 ad 2 points feedback to brand new members when I greet them. I have set my threshold to 3 and the people I want to "follow around" have at least 3 points.

I just checked and one of the first things that all must do to apply is to join the Life in Africa Global group. I do not find any of these names listed as members. Perhaps that is why they cannot upload their applications. Go back to the instructions here http://www.ned.com/group/lia-glo bal/ws/centeradminpost/ and follow the directions exactly in the getting started section.

We can give some extra time to do this.

As long as you follow the instruction without missing even a single step, it takes only five minutes to upload the cv and letter of intent. Okello Francis from Gulu uploaded. Oketa should have done this. Susan and other seems have not even joined ned><uganda.

Guys just try and follow the link that Evvy posted, am sure you will find your way. Another thing Perhaps with Oketa who is using the center computer, those linears are not like windows xp so first save your cvs and letter of intent in shared folders then it will be easy for you than when you have them on flash disk. but if needs be to beat the deadline try window xp computer some where.

Sorry teams, I am a bit behind on counting up the points. I will get it done this weekend and have the standings posted by Monday. I have been knee deep in sorting jungle beads and getting things ready to start selling on this end. Keep your fingers crossed. Now if the weather will just hold I might be able to get out and about a bit more.

I have some auction sites going up in the next few days and will send you the links when they are done. I have also sent out over 400 letters to churches and local groups to get support for the kids programs. I am also trying to get some local media coverage about our programs. As for the centeradmin post, it's very unfortunate that many are failing to upload their applications. Robert have you tried again after joining the Lia global group ? if you still are not successful, then I just do not know what the problem is. It seems to me that the bigger problem is that the group in Kampala just has a time advantage. If the computers in Gulu are off line for a week, Kampala has a 33% advantage just based on time.

Good questions Peter. On igive, if the store shows up as having been visited then it did record even if the page did not load on your computer so you do not need to revisit it.

On goodsearch you do not log in. We are doing this as a whole group and I stated in the instructions that the results will be split equally. So the more we all do the more we all make and the more points each group gets. Its the honor system. I am assuming that all groups are participating. And as long as people are not searching the exact same thing at the exact same time, it should be okay. You just have to be careful about searching the same things over and over as that could get us disqualified.

And Ezra, I do hear what you are saying. However, I do not think that Gulu could have aticipated or planned that all their computers would go down. I will come up with a way to make this fair so I hope that Kireka will just keep on clicking as normal and we will work this out. As I said before, the count in the middle of the month is just for information only to let people know where they stand. It is the count at the end of the month that really counts.

We are figuring otu how to settle our problem in Gulu and very soon we shall boad the bus and move with others. Ohterwise our new trainees for click4 ASfrica are ever coming to check but the problem not yet rectified. We tried to look for this Fuse in Gulu but no where to be seen .

Peter it is not an electronic fuse but the computer one. They are transparent in nature.

They are suppost to be like below.

10A which has two lines(Wires) here is 2000each. four

F5AL 250V I thas only a wire inside the transparent tube. four

F3A It has one wire from inside and one outside. four

THEY ARE ALL TRANSPARENT

Hi Robert, Grace is coming there today so untill when she reashes and tell me exactly what to buy because am not sure of what to buy! there are many things named fuse and all for power transimssion. i.e mulitplugs, power cables and extention cables. I know there is power transmission problem but the fuse to buy? we use the same computers but I can't see any thing eles apart from the fuses I derscribed above. However I will know better as soon as Grace arrives there and we shall use the bus to send you.

Am sorry but you will get them soon and by monday you will be ok if it's only the fuse problem.

Hi Gulu,

Sorry about your fuse problems. I can help solve your fuse problem but I need to know how many and which fuses have blown. If more than one fuse has blown then we may have a serious problem and the problem will have to be traced and fixed before we replace the blown fuses. Even if only one fuse has blown we still need to know why but the problem may not be a big problem and we can go ahead and replace the blown fuse. Also check the fuse on the charge controller, it looks like a car fuse, I think it is a 30A fuse, you can get a similar one in Gulu town for Shs500 or so. But before you change this fuse check that there are no short circuits on the load circuit because that is what may have caused the charge controller fuse to blow. Sometime back I had left some spare fuses (the clear glass type, 20mm 3A and 5A)with Munnu, he may have stored them somewhere so look around and you may find them.

Please be cautious here, multiple fuses seldom blow without some other problem. Troubleshoot and fix this problem BEFORE replacing any fuse.

Also, Linda please note that gulu has continuous access because they are on solar panels. Kireka has power outages very often.

Hello Kireka and Gulu from THAILAND!

the things we are learning here are so exciting. Can't wait to share pictures with you folks - too many to upload now.

The people we are staying with here give the word community a whole new meaning. The things they are making and doing together are astounding. Organic fertilizer and biogas are really interesting examples that are so VERY EASY (and not at all expensive) to produce... and good for society too. Can you imagine that we've even seen a vehicle (a pick-up truck) running on recycled cooking oil?

Sorry about the computer problems in Gulu - we will have some limited access to computers for the next few days here in Thailand so hopefully Norbert can help you get it worked out if you need him.

Meanwhile, her are my thoughts about why this should not affect the contest:

the Click4Africa contest runs through mid JUNE - I really doubt this will be the last time that one of the centers has computer problems.
you have people on your team who are NOT in Gulu... and this is exactly WHY you were encouraged to recruit international members!
if you were trying to meet another kind of deadline, you would go out and find another computer instead of expecting the deadline to change for you.
As norbert mentioned, Kireka's computers are on the power grid, which means they are subject to power outages very often. Gulu's solar panels mean Gulu doesn't have that same problem. So actually Kireka has had a built in disadvantage from the beginning.

I personally don't think anyone should stop participating (or even complain) because of the power and computer problems that we all know arise on a regular basis. Instead, I hope you will all put some time into thinking creatively about alternative solutions to overcoming these kinds of challenges which commonly occur.

From left, the two fuse of are okay.

From right, the two fuse has problems. One has the wire insude which has been broken and one has a crack on the transparent glass.

This is amazing! what and how does recycled cooking oil work? is there some eles called cooking oil or the cooking oil I know? if its the cooking oil I know what quantity does one use in cooking to even have it being recycled? my wife uses cooking oil for 100/= is not even enough!

That is good news and hope we shall import the ideas to Uganda. "Linda, that cooking oil you using as fuel, it is better I use for frying pancake :) its a very good news just as Lira municipality member of paliament shocked Ugandans by lounching bicycle that uses local waragi as fuel, I think with local waragi in Uganda and cooking oil in Thailand, no more shortage of fuel more so when Kenyans go on strike.

Here in California, and elsewhere in the US, there are quite a few people who use cooking oil in their cars. I believe the car has to be modified. I am not sure about all the details, but I will ask my daughter's roommate's father, who uses cooking oil in his old diesel Mercedes-Benz. He goes around to restaurants and they give him their used cooking oil, he takes it home and filters it, then puts it right into his gas tank.

Here is what I was able to find out. The engine has to be a diesel engine--you can't use the cooking oil in a gasoline engine.

Oh dear , I have really been mising a lot. thanks everybody for all that is taking place around the world.

Gulu has been a real night mare , we could not get anyway to communicate with anybody at all, I had to wait for one hour at the cafe and ended up with no access to the computers. Mine became even worse especially when there was no network for my phone. for all these reasons, I decided to come back to Kampala last night leaving Gulu at 5.00pm and I arrived in kampala at midnight, thanks God i am able t talk to people again on line.

The computer problem in Gulu may drag on for sometime if it turns out that it's just not the blown fuses, because if it's something that needs repair, then we may fail to get the right person for that , but otherwise the spare fuses should have arrived today in Gulu. let me wait for their feedback.

However as Norbert and CJ has said before, this should not stop us from continuing with our contest. and I think also as Evvy said before, the counting in the middle of the month is only to show us where we are , so maybe it would not matter so much if we do it all at the end of the month.

btw - with regard to cars that run on cooking oil... you can either modify the diesel engine, or the cooking oil. The one we saw has been running on cooking oil converted to bio-diesel by adding sodium hydroxide mixed with methanol (bought locally, and available in Uganda). He made no engine modifications. Apaprently this works on older engines better than in newer engines (sounds like a conspiracy by the oil companies to keep us all dependent, if you ask me!)

Our interviews were very successful. We had our very original members, like Monica Nankoma ,Tom Oketekene and the current ones like George Ovola and Teopista Akware.

In all we had six interviewees , two for Kampala and three for Gulu and one for Gulu did go through the interview because of lack of papers which should have been in his possesion.

After all these , we immediately sat down and came up with the two people whom who thought were the right ones for the two centers. I will come out with their names after doing all the formalities.

Meanwhile our new Chief Accountant (Lucy Lamunu) has already reported and has started part time until after two weeks when she will be fulltime with us. Congratulations Lucy and welcome to the LiA family, hope you are going to have a good time with us.

For my problem, I have written that because any one who try to open that computer will definately read my account( Only those signed up with ned)

Thankyou for your prayers and well wishes that made me pass the interviews for the position of Chief Accountant, and thankyou Grace for welcoming me into this Farmily.

I also congratulate those who made it for the positions of Center Administrators, I hope we shall enjoy our time here as we strive together for the betterment of our community.

Ihave just departed with Grace after my second day of orientation at Life in Africa Foundation which started yesterday, although still on a part time basis as I have to complete certain formalities before I can come on full board, hopefully by 20th. As you all know, it is a good thing when joinning a new organisation to first learn the organisation itself and the systems in place, before one can take any course of action, this is what Iam going through. Appreciation to Grace for the generous support she is rendering to me. Today we were going through children's activities and I feel alot more informed on that now.Hopefully, by the end of this week we shall have finalised with the orientation and ready to start off.

On that note therefore,Kireka,Please be informed that I will be visiting you beginning from Monday 10th to Friday 14th. I will communicate to you the time later.

Hi every body, More so greetings to our gift mum who is in Thailand, also Lucy you are wellcome to this community and hope we shall share alot, Christina asked, Peter - why are your computers not assembled?? well, as per our discussions and meetings that have been carried right from the time when we shifted to Kireka to the time of Evvey leaving for USA, and CJ leaving for Thailand, there has been need for Lia Kireka to look for some strategic place where the crafts can be sold locally and also internet cafe as source of imcome for the community. indeed we got some place and rented and also apllied to MTN (mobli telephone network) so that we can improve on the speed of our internet to meet a web cafe standard.

We have paid them and they have installed their equipments and they have remained to network the computors. but for the time beeing today I have connected one computer on the dailup that we normally use so that to use all the money the we normally load monthly. Grace told Evvy about the shifting of which she also had question why we shifted and we have been discussing with her all concerning shifting and the state of the Center.

That is why I mentioned some where that the computers were not yet assembled. But I as type now, am using the community computers as usual though for the past three days I have been running to a web cafe.

Thanks to every body once again, and concerning the center admin, I have been one of the contestants and right now am just on my knees praying to see that I take this challenging job.

This is really a very sad moment for all of us

With great sorrow I would like to annouce to you the tragedy that has befallen the Norbet's family, his parents were involved in a car accident yesterday when they were going to Gulu for a burial of a close friend. Unfortunately the mother died on the way to hospital and the father and the driver was transfered in a very critical condition and regained consciouness after being taken to a hospital in Gulu, Let's pray for her soul and for the recovey of his father and the driver whose conditons are still not very clear.

It's really very sad ! May her soul rest in eternal peace!

Burial will be in Gulu on Sunday, those who can , please let's attend and give some courage to Norbert and Christina who will also be attending it, Norbert please take heart! we all know the pain that you are going through, but we are with you in prayers.

Bravo a new place, a new place at last we have got a place for the kids program . In this place we can even have group production. Am so happy for it. And the good thing it is with in the Acholi quarters. The kids now have a big play ground which is enough for them to have all their activties in it. Dear Ned members, Some thing happend in Gulu today.

While children were in for their inter school sport(Atlethic) at Pece stadium, lightning strucked and wounded approximately 16 primary kids. From the hospital where i went(Gulu Indipendent Hospital, 02 kids had already died and many still under bad condition. From other hospital, i have not got any report but they were rushed to variuse hospitals after the incidents.

It is however the first timefor the rain drop this year in Gulu.

Please pray for the kids.

I talked to my friend Nathan in Jinja briefly this afternoon. He told me that news reports in the paper yesterday said that twelve of the children had perished. I looked for the news stories, but did not find them.

I'm very sad. Anyone who's worked with children knows that for all the irritation, frustration and exasperation, the one thing that's always true is a concern for their safety. The deaths of these students is very tragic.

I was reminded of a beautiful song by Geoffre Oryema "Lapwony." Here is the story:

This song is about a school teacher, whose body was found lying in a school compound. He was struck by lightning and died on the spot, just as he was getting ready to head home. He had a pile of exercise books which he was suppose to correct at home. As a tribute to their beloved teacher, the pupils composed a song that they entitled "Lapwony." It rained heavily on the afternoon Lapwony died. Someone found his farewell letter, the ink all but washed away.

There's a good YouTube video of Oryema performing Lapwony. I suppose hearing (twice) only made me feel sadder. Still at least something to take note of this tragic loss of these bright lives.

Today all the religious leaders of different denorminations and the district offices with all NGOs held a prayer(Marsh) At Pece Stadium where the incident of lightning occured. Primary schools were closed and kids went for the prayer.

Mean while the district decided to old off the arthlic for the moment they wiil discuss and if need be , the venue will be changed to another place.

According to the radio talk shaw, the elders were saying this incident has now occured three times since early 1970s.

Those wounded in the hospital has now recovered while other still week

Of the two kids who died at the sopors, one had his tongue showlenout and the other had a serious injury on head.

It was after Lunch when kids went on fro worm up to start the afternoon session was when the incident occured.

This thing hit the kids three times. For the fisrt time it happened and the kids could see their fellows falling as if they were for joke and it continued up to the third time.

That was the up date.

Gulu we center had been struggling to start the candle making project and for the first time they have started today.

Members are put into groups and it was facilitated by one of the members called Katusi Denis who attended the training earlier on .

They thought of minimising the expenses by making even the learning (Training )products to be for sale since they are all class one .

According to facilitator, Katusi, he said it can light for three hours and it was tested

Members learned how to make it very fast and every body was so active during introduction. It was more of the practicle that made members to learn it first.

Thanks to every one, we are fighting too and nail to make every thing work, we have began to recieve mob customers in the caf e but we have one big problem! most of the customers come with flash disk and they dont know how to use flash on linears, people are used to window xp and this makes very hard for Ezra to be like a teacher in the web cafe because if five people need assistance on how to find the information on flash then guess how hard its!!

On 15 th of March, Francis Okello who took up the post of centeradmin Gulu, officially joined us . He is now full time at his work station and if there is any cocerns or advice to the Gulu community, he will always be available for all our concerns , because he is the one who is now full time at the center.

Meanwhile Peter has also officially started as the centeradmin Kampala on that same day . For him it's a bit unique since he is just shifting posts. Peter has for the past almost two years been the assistant to the Directors for operations, but this time , he is the top most at the community level, Congartulations Peter for this achievement.

I'm not sure this is the right threat to put this. But I was very interested in the candle making. There's been a lot of discussion about crafts here at Ned, but sometimes I find it hard to figure out ways to be helpful.

(Speaking of being helpful: There's my big black cat on my lap right now and he doesn't want to be helpful. He would like my undivided attention.)

I thought about candle holders. I have an old book 55 New Tin Can Projects This book was written in the 1930's when everyone in America was very poor. I like the book because in the projects he shows how to work with sheet metal in detail using projects made from tin cans. Tin cans today are not quite like they were back then. Something that concerns me is the soldering on new cans, because the steel is generally coated with a plastic coating. I think it would work, but the metal would have to be sanded a little.

My main concern was not the particular project, but the idea of sharing project plans. So I went to the Ugandalinks wiki I made and copied the plans for this project. You can find them here. By the way everyone is invited to add to or edit pages at the wiki. The password is ned4lia.

Something that the wiki allows is for the pages to be saved as PDF files. That's very handy if people want to print the files out. But when I did that from the wiki page, the pictures I'd copied from the book and saved as JPEG files got cut off. I think that often times that feature of the wiki will work fine, it just didn't work this time. So I made a PDF file and added it to the wiki page.

By the way the wiki is not hard to get around in. But sometimes you may not see the table of contents. On the right side of the pages is a box with three tabs at the top. Click on the tab that says Sidebar and it will show a list of the pages on the wiki.

If anyone is curious, I would love it if you look at the page on making the candle holder. I'm interested in your feedback. Again it's not the particular project that's so important, but trying to invent ways to share useful information. Of course if you think the subject is interesting I would be happy to present more from the book. The author is very clever at showing ways to do things and the drawings are quite good.

Tin can art was really popular in the late 60's and I was really into it. I made so many candleholders and then of course gave them all away as gifts. It was really fun and they can be quite beautiful. Check out this page. You won't believe these were made from just tin cans.

What I love about the old book is how well the author teaches methods of work. Thin sheet metal may not be too common, but is probably available.

The real reason I posted was about the experiment about sharing information. I want to find ways to share useful information. But it's not so easy to know how.

I really love the tin cans more so that one Power shares because its so unique and looks simple to make, its easy to get tins as there are many things sold in Tins so its just matter of collecting and recycling. But this will need again solidaring wire and learning how to make it.

I am really so impressed with the candle project in Gulu. I witnessed the whole process from the very beginning and was so interesting. If only the market could be there then this is a very big step forward. At the meeting with them last week, They really seem to have very good plans , very soon they are going to surprise us with another very good production program , I will not reveal this yet, but am really impressed.

On the same note, Kampala has also gone a long way to set up their internet cafe and sorting out the children's activities space at the Acholi Quarters. I know that as soon as you settle, you are also going to begin your other activities with the ladies.

Thank you so much for all of the condolences posted here. I saw them for the first time last night and was very moved. It's been a pretty awful time. Norbert's father is still requiring full time care, so my plans to spend the rest of this year in the USA have been modified. I still plan to visit the USA for 4-5 weeks in May-June, but then I will come back to spend the rest of the year in Uganda after all.

I know we have a lot of things to finalize (paperwork, etc.) and have heard that there has been a lot of progress on that front. I hope to have the time next week to start catching up with where you are and providing some of the input you may need from me. We are hoping to spend a few weeks in Gulu before I head off to the USA.

Thanks God for keeping us all these times and working tirelessly for our communinities.We centre Gulu managed to do the following running projects with the community,candles making, children's programms(balance diets,games,debates,home visits(followup),internet for change,school fees programm,Adults Ilitercy education,and the Loans scheme programm is also still on.From the 22/3/08 upto the 30/3/08 we have been with Cory Richardson from canada acompanied by Emmanuel Norman from Mbale,It us been a very intereting time being with cory at LiA Gulu,because he tought our community how to make Hammocks and made 18 of them,and to make free pans,introduced ring game for the children in the centre,and above all cory gave two sawing machines for the communinty in the centre.It us been amazing month of march implementing the running projects in the centre with the little resources and eguipments for to day to day running of the activities.Hoping for better and more works in the month of April for the community.And finally together with Gearge we are developing a three difference proposals on Adults Iletercy education,Ventilators Making and children recreational activities.

Just give their profile -1 or -2 negative points and send the web address for their profile to another 1-2 members you know online asking them to do the same. Once they have -10 points (or so) they are not allowed to send others PM's or post in public places.

Hullo nedsters and LiA members,we have now started with the Adult Iliteracy Education programm(Learning) last friday with 12members who attended.we have two professioal teachers(tutors) from christ the king PTC,one of the primary teachers training college in Gulu-Uganda,they are really devoted volunteers helping our community.Its just the beginig i know many will still join the rest.We have decided to start the learning due to the civil war which prevailed in the region for the last 21years leadindg to total poverty for our population,and so many could not afford for school fees.And know since we are seeing relative peace,we want them to learn the basis of education ,ie writing,reading,speaking and calcular(geometry)plus social aspect of life.And we hope they will go out and fit in the morden society very well.Give your input please.

1.Candles making-----------_managed to train----- there were only 10 members

more 35members and now plus 35 make it to 45 on how to make members trained. candles.

_In the month we----- the numbers are less compared

produced 553sticks to that of the month of march,: because of no proper market. but planning to produced more when we get reliable market.

2.Gallery production

(beads,hammocks&crafs)----_beads continoused --- were produced to a greater numbers

compared to that of march,just because we got some market.

_hammocks remained-- out of 18 hammocks we produced

in the month of march,we sold only four(4).and we are still advertising fo the market.Its still new in the region.

_crafts--------------- crafts were not purchased,and we: are calling for market day july.

3.Adult learning-----------------kick off--------------------the was initiated last month but

now its effective this month ref;in the last message i sent.

4.Childrens'weekend programm----its an ongoing-------the children who come to the

center,have been doing the following plays,debates,dramma,drawing and eating the balance diet,that is every saturdays.ther was problems of prize increament for the food stuffs in the market.but we tried to squese the budget.

5.Piggery----------------was not started------------------- we planned to start it immediately

It seems that before production gets into full swing for any new product, sales/market research could be very helpful. Making candles, liquid soap, hammocks is all great...but without sales at the end of the production cycle no one makes money.

Once the products are made withing a production team who are the people responsible for selling them? How to they go about making sales, or trying to make sales?

Mark for sure that is an area that has really been bringing all the production program to a standstill the times that we have been trying the jewelry. I know it's somehow hard to make sales here, but it really would make a lot of sense if the marketing department is developed even more than the production itself.as per now, there's no particular person who is handling sales. anybody who thinks he knows where to sell something would try and contact that market.

I remember in a bid to try to put this in place, we once hired Freda who left before anything was developed at all.so maybe if our next step in the production would be to have first a very strong marketing team, that would help us determine how much of a product to start with. I know this is a very hard task and really needs a qualified person who will dedicate his/her time just for this and where we are right now as the CBOs, we are not yet in the capacity to hire one, due to our financial status. though I understand that sometimes a marketing person gets a percentage of what he would have sold, the difficult part would be the commitment to such a person.

Mark maybe we can resume developing this department together as we had once tried before.

Market remains the biggest issue for any business to run. That is why I had to survey on ligiud soap and vanish that I would have started by now but as soon as I get start up capital where we expect, I think it may do better.

Basing on the community activities and reports, The weekly children's activities still remain music dance and drama alonside nutrition. The idea behind music dance and drama is train them to a level that we can invite some quests, say area memeber of paliament, mayer etc so that their performances go with founderaising.

With respect to sales, the crafts sales is still almost nothing and cafe still remains between 6000/= to 12,000/= a day or sometimes below that a day. perhaps people have not learnt about it and we are working to put a sigh post soon and more banners. related to other product development, the ladies are trying to make sampless of cellphone bags that we shall try explain to mobile telephone network company its cause so that they purchase them for their promotion.

The performances of the sponsered kids were both good and fair and we argue those who fairly did to work hard next term for better results. below are the sponsred kids names and their performances:

Grace, I think sales training for a person or people who want to really make sales calls is a great idea. There does need to be a generous sales commission plan in place to compensate the person or people for their sales efforts. Great sales people are crucial to almost every successful organization.

Would it then mean this person should be already trained at the time of employment or it would be the organizations who get him/her trained, I know both ideas would work only that the first one may be more demanding and calls for a commitment. Okay if we are to go by the second one would someone have to go through a formal training or are there some people out there with marketing skills who would like to give us some guidelines that would help us set the training kits for these people. It may not be too difficult , but needs someone with the skills .Am sure if we could get this particular area worked on, our sales may go up in all the products that we are looking at. Technical know how matters a lot and I believe that with some guidance here and there we shall have this sorted out.

Mark,thanks for your contribution on our production and sale/market.It make its had for us to produce in more when we do not yet have proper market.Due to financial constrain with the CBO's(Gulu and Kampala) ,at the moment its become hard to recruit trained saler/salers/marketing officer,but never the less we have resolved for the time being with the community members that each and every individual is entitle for marketing both locally and internationally,Mark let you also be part of them. Well, it's been a few years... but I've trained hundreds of sales people over the years. Never online, and never in another country.

A good sales person will always have a job. Why? Because when they can sell well, and earn a commission, they will always find doors open to them. Also, salespeople are usually the best paid? Why? Because they are "rainmakers" meaning they make things happen.

Qualities of a good sales person? Good communicator. Good listener. Likes people. Good with people. Easy communication style. Not afraid to "ask for the order". Takes on and understands sales as a profession. Good sense of humor. Believes in his/her product/service. Understands what the customer wants. Overcomes objections.

ABC. Always be closing.
