Craft Ideas

Craft Ideas

Ezra obinga was kind enough to start a workspace for me to share ideas. I like sharing ideas, but I know that my ideas are not always very good, or that the y don't fit the situation. I think that's okay, because you never know when a good idea might pop up. So the thing to do about this page is to give me feedback. If there is an idea that looks promising, make a not, tell me, and together we can work together to hammer out the idea.

Last night I read an interesting interview with an economist named Herman Daly. I don't think it's very important to go and read the interview, but Daly says some things in it that I think are very important.

He talks about economics. Economics in one way can be thought of as the study of money. And the purpose of this page is about money--How can we develop income so we can go to school? Daly says that people who study economics are very good at coming up with ideas about efficiently allocating scarce resources. One way to think about that is economists are very good at coming up for a price for things. But Daly says there are two other important problems in economics that economists are very good about coming up with ideas about: distribution and scale. Here's a little of what he says:

So allocation is about how resources get divided up among different users - how much goes to produce bicycles, how much to cars, how much to houses. You know, is that efficient given what people want and their ability to pay. You end up giving people the most that you can get of what they want with the resources available. That's a question of efficiency - are allocations efficient or inefficient? The distribution question is a question of justice. Who gets all the stuff that was produced. Does it go to you or me. And that's a question of justice - is it fair, is it a fair distribution? And then the third question of scale - the total amount that gets produced in all of the resources and the depletion and pollution generated by the use of those resources. Is that at a total scale which is within the absorptive and regenerative capacity of the ecosystem? Or are you destroying natural capital at a rate which is too great? The welfare effects of destroying natural capital may be greater than the welfare benefits of what you produced. And whose products required the destruction of that national capital?

I believe Uganda has great potential and that the young generation of Uganda will bring this potential to fruit. One fact of the matter is that the distribution of money is all out of wack. There are rich countries and poor countries, and the rules of the game are stacked against poor countries. But rich countries have a blind spot and it has to do with scale that Daly talks about. Uganda can gain advantage by paying attention to what the rich people in rich countries aren't paying attention to and that's distribution and scale.

It's good to think about whether what we are doing is done fairly, and to think about whether what we are doing isn't destroying our resources or the ecology where we live.

I will come back to this page, for now I'm just going to list some areas I want to explore further. Add your own ideas to the list :-)

Seed Exchange

Blacksmithing and metal work

Candle holder

Food Processing

Needle Crafts

Sales and Marketing

Pottery

Charcoal Briquetting

The person hired to fill the Community Administrator position will be required to communicate regularly using this and other platforms.

The application procedure for the Community Administrator position is designed to assess each applicant's aptitude for learning new online skills, while at the same time collecting information from applicants in a space that staff from Life in Africa Foundation (Uganda), Life in Africa-USA and the CBOs in Gulu and Kampala can access.

The Director,
Life In Africa Uganda,

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: APPLICATION FOR COMMUNITY ADMNINSTRATOR GULU

We real pleasure; I read and understand the advert running in the Life In Africa Web as regards the subject matter. This therefore, serves to indicate my interest in the subject area. I humbly wish to extend my profound gratitude as I await your consideration for the same. I am a male Ugandan aged 32. I hold Bachelors in Business Administration of Makerere University Business School, Professional part 2 of ACCA and a diploma in Business Administration of Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

While working with Roliat Estate Agency Ltd, one of the oldest estate managers in the country with properties in major towns of Uganda (Kampala, Jinja, Mbale, and Mbarara) I gained a strong experience in Administrative affairs since I directly worked as Property manager / Accountant for over 4 years. All requirements involved here, I treasure valuable knowledge.

My innovativeness impacted a lot in my past job. Firstly the system of documentation was poor. I introduced proper filling methods like filling in folders and filling cabinets were availed. Secondly, I also introduced impressed system to handle daily expenditure and vouching in all payments. The other thing that I strongly believe has and still helping my past employers is the introduction of quarterly Tenant / Landlord statements.

What I know with Life In Africa that has always taken my emotions and makes me feel I should be part of the team is the way it has taken good care of our destitute people who have for a long time been suffering from war, their children not able to go school due to school fees constraint and are not even able to meet daily needs. Life In Africa thank you for your generosity coming out in helping these people.

Thank you,

Yours faithfully

Dear Madam,

RE: APLLICATION FOR THE POST OF COMMUNITY ADMINISTRATOR KIREKA

I humbly submit my application to your office for the above mentioned post so that to continue working with the community that I am part of and to see that we meet its aim and objectives. I am a male; Christian Ugandan aged 27 who is blessed with twin girls. Educationally, I hold a Uganda advanced certificate of education and Uganda ordinary certificate respectively as shall be presented if called for the interview.

In respect to the administrator position, I have worked as a gardener and foreman for the organization from 2003 to 2005 that put me in day to daily monitoring of activities of the centre such as cleaning, welcoming and screening visitors in, organizing venue for the meetings, store keeping, and loan processing. From 2006 to date, I also featured assistant to the directors for operations that put me as a link between the administrators and the community. I have gained enough experience in all aspects of community needs.

For innovative point of view, I have trained over fifty community members the computer basic and internet. 99% of life in Africa members including me who joined the organization did not know what a key board or floppy was! But since I became a quick leaner, am making them also get the tips I have got and they love it which to me is a very significant impact to the community.

I know Life in Africa as a community based organization that aims at empowering the grass root people by sharing their views with other global communities and other classes of people. I like to work with the organization that feels that, the poorest of the poor or peasants should be reached and uplifted so as to break the poverty cycle among individuals.

Thanks

Yours faithfully

If you've been recruited by either the click4kireka or click4gulu team, you must tag your own profile with the name of the team in order to appear on the team list and have your points counted toward getting that Center better connected.

Life in Africa-Global

Replace this text with your own description of this group.

Contents

Getting Started

Announcements

Directory

Getting Started

A workspace is different. It's a place where people can work on writing
documents together. Anyone can edit, assuming the group permissions
allow it. Just click Edit on the menu bar at the top of the screen, and
you'll see what I mean.

As you begin to edit more and more complex documents, it's important to
keep this plain text clean. Don't be overly concerned about the
presentation of your document; instead, focus on the content and
readability in the plain text. If it isn't readable in the Edit box,
your colleagues won't be able to contribute.

One fun thing about workspaces is that you can create new pages just by
naming them in your document. For example, here's a new page now:
Sandbox Notice that it's a single word, and followed by a single
underscore. If I wanted to create a page with multiple words, I would
enclose the page in back-ticks, like this: My experiments To get
that, I typed this: `My experiments`_

But remember, just creating a new page doesn't make it easy to find. And
if other people can't find your page, what's the point of working on it?
Make sure you don't create orphans. Always think about linking to your
pages from a Home page of some sort. If you can't think of a Home page
for your pages, then at least use an Index page to gather them all in
one place.

Now, another tip on how to format your documents. Remember, the plain
text is the most important thing: it has to be readable to be useful.
So, use plenty of white space. Always leave a blank line between
paragraphs, and before and after headings or lists. Just take a look at
the plain text of this document, and you'll see what I mean.

Also remember to start every paragraph at the left edge of the Edit box;
don't indent paragraphs like they taught you in typing class. If you
indent a paragraph in the plain text, it will end up indented a lot more
on the web page. Use that to your advantage when you like, but
sparingly.

Beyond that, there are a few fancy tricks you might want to learn as you
get more familiar with this workspace. Be sure to refer to the
/help/Punctuation Help document to learn more if you get stuck.

Now, it's time to get back to work!

Announcements

Add announcements here

Directory

Items you may want to include in your group workspace.

People

Projects

Resources

This is an idea for a new way of sourcing microloan funds for Africa

This idea is not yet in operation

In another conversation, Mark Grimes said:

Ned will fund the enterprise, but instead of "traditional interest", the interest will be in the form of single beaded bracelets. So 87.5 beaded bracelets would be the "interest" on the loan for a year for a $250 loan. Once the loan is paid back, it will be re-loaned for another startup business in Uganda under the same terms. This idea came after reading a book about Room to Read which has built thousands of libraries in rural areas around the world and talked about the importance of local partnership, buy-ins and action on the ground. If we go this route, Ned could initially look at partnering with 10-15 $100-$500 business launches in Uganda.

and he also said:

No worries, we can right-sized the numbers...I just went the easy math route. Perhaps it looks like $250 at 35% at $1.35 each for 64.8 bracelets.

and

Not locked in at 35%, just trying to get creative with possible non-traditional methods.

So that got me thinking and playing with a few numbers to see if we can get them to make sense on both sides of the equation. I've drawn up some scenarios that try to put this basic concept into practice, to see what might happen if we think about offering a way to procure crafts that also offers the reseller the opportunity to invest in their favorite category of micro-businesses in Africa. I'm not just thinking about ned with this, but about creating a way for others (LiA USA included) to invest in microfinance and crafts at the same time.

This idea is particularly interesting to me because it might offer a way for small business owners to earn an attractive return on investments in tailor-targeted microfinance in ways that don't violate SEC regulations.

A few of my background assumptions in developing this idea are as follows:

Because of SEC regulations on earning interest on investments in microfunds, we should eliminate all mention of the word interest in the transaction.

An investor cannot engage in microlending in Africa without an operational partner on the ground to receive applications, vet, verify, recover and report on the loans. Starting out requires lending capital plus operational resources to have that legwork done.

LiA needs to diversify our lending capital base. We knew this already when Kiva introduced a new policy that will only allow partners to source up to 1/3 of our lending capital from Kiva. In order to scale, we will need to scale proportionally from Kiva and other sources.

Here's some scenarios

of packages we might offer:

Scenario 1: bracelets

Purchase 1000 bracelets @ $5 each + shipping (recommended retail price $8)

Get a $3.59 rebate on every bracelet you sell or choose to keep after 2 years

Return unsold and broken bracelets for a full rebate after 2 years

OR defer your rebates for another 2 years and get 750 more bracelets for free

At the end of 4 years, you can still claim the $3.59 rebate on up to 1000 bracelets

or

Scenario 2: mixed bead necklaces

Purchase 500 necklaces over 2 years at $10 each + shipping

Get a $6.75 rebate on every necklace you sell or choose to keep after 2 years

Return unsold and broken necklaces for a full rebate after 2 years

**OR defer your rebates for another 2 years and get 400 more necklaces for free

At the end of 4 years, you can still claim the $7.25 rebate on up to 500 necklaces

LiA Foundation obligations:

During the 2 years you are awaiting your resellers rebate, Life in Africa will

Disburse a minimum of 50 micro-loans in your name to _______-owned micro-businesses in Uganda over 2 years - avg loan size $320

Document each loan disbursed in story form online at the beginning and end of the loan term on co-brandable interactive public pages, where you and your customers can ask questions, offer advice and find other ways to get involved.

Allow retailers to republish loans documentation & photos for commercial purposes

Update a co-branded micro-loan portfolio performance page bi-monthly, with financial information and a featured borrower story

Deliver the products ordered in 2 installments: one shipment every 12 months, starting 1 month after craft-capital is received. Shipping is calculated at $25 per shipment from Uganda, payable in advance. (Still thinking through a way to arrange shipment thru lifeinafrica usa under the same arrangement).

Here's some numbers

Scenario 1: bracelets

($5000) in craft 4 credit funds renders 1000 bracelets

$1,410 is the wholesale value of the crafts delivered

$3,590 is the amount of the rebate due to the reseller if all bracelets are sold or kept after 2 years

$5,000 is delivered in goods and cash rebates to the buyer over a 2 year period.

AND:

$8,000+ is the retail value of the bracelets at LiA's recommended retail price, so

$13,000+ is the potential return for the reseller (ie, a potential total return of 260%+ over 2 years).

$6000+ represents additional potential return (thru retail sales of the product) if you roll over your rebate for another 2 years (hmmm... wondering how to make that more attractive than pulling out and starting again)

Scenario 2: necklaces

($5000) in craft 4 credit funds renders 500 bracelets

$1,625 is the wholesale value of the crafts delivered

$3,375 is the amount of the rebate due to the reseller if all bracelets are sold or kept after 2 years

$5,000 is delivered in goods and cash rebates to the buyer over a 2 year period.

AND:

$9,000+ is the retail value of the bracelets at LiA's recommended retail price, so

$14,000+ is the potential return for the reseller (ie, a potential total return of 280%+ over 2 years).

$7200+ represents additional potential return (thru retail sales of the product) if you roll over your rebate for another 2 years

Implementation

$5000 received in crafts 4 credit funds means

$4,000 in co-branded lending capital, and

$1,000 in operational expenses

($424) (for bracelets) and $909 (for necklaces) goes to the producers

Interest charged to borrowers (24% p.a.) and remaining operational funds are shared as follows:

LiA foundation 25%

i4c reporting 25%

WE Center Admin 15%

loans mgmt 35%

WE Center admin is supported by other program funds and membership fees; loans mgmt is additionally supported by loan processing fees.

Ideally, BUYERS CAN CHOOSE their target group: group owned businesses, former child-soldier owned businesses, women owned businesses, etc. or simply Ugandan owned businesses. (This targeting could be a perfect entry way for scaling through partnerships with other CBOs as has always been the plan.)

Comments

cj: is this making any sense at all??!

mg: Could work. Here are some initial thoughts. I suspect the "package" would have to be broken down well below $5,000 USD. 1,000 bracelets it a lot of product to move, and $5,000 is quite a sum of money. Also, I'm not entirely sure if (for the most part) those interested in doing microloans direct to people/orgs would also have the capacity/desire to also sell bracelets. I do think there's something here...I think it just needs some downsizing in terms of overall dollars mainly.

Also, I'm not entirely sure if (for the most part) those interested in doing microloans direct to people/orgs would also have the capacity/desire to also sell bracelets.

Clearly, and ordinary folks aren't likely to care much about co-branded loans they can use in customer promotions either. Just a couple of partners could help us get it started at a scale that can allow us to get the systems in place. Then we could scale it to other small businesses at lower amounts. The key is to target small businesses, I think.

Perhaps there could be different rebate (and projected return levels) for smaller orders, with more attractive rebates & potential ROI calculations offered to larger buyers. Will continue to play with numbers....

more scenarios

wondering if this kind of scaled offer might work better...

necklaces 50

price/necklace $10.00
