the projects that NUWECHI are indulged in are piggery, apiary and poultry in NUWECHI and all these are aimed at empowering less financially fortunate people in the north to sustain a normal standard of living befitting for every any human being.the prosperity of the projects are supposed to grow alongside the organization and hopefully expand to bigger heights. these are some of the pictures of the above mentioned projects, these sort of activities help the hopeless obtain some hope for a better future and also make the women self sufficient hence giving the a chance against the world which favours the men better,in northern uganda there's NUWECHI but many others should set up such to
make a better world for all it's dwellers.

Purpose: Construction of a modern Chicken rearing Unit wit a capacity of 100 layers, as demonstration and training opject and for production of eggs and chicken meat for the eco camp.

Brief Description of the Proposal and Budget plan:

During Appreciative Inquiry in three rural communities, all decided to take up chicken rearing as income generating activity.
Amasiko wants to take a lead and construct a modern chicken house for demonstration and training purposes, where young people can come and learn about chicken rearing. It will give Amasiko also an opportunity to experience challenges of rural farmers who want to start such a small scale enterprize and find solutions that are not directly accessible to farmers and dessiminate those. The products (eggs and chicken meat) will be used at the eco-camp for self sufficiency. On a longer term, Amasiko could produce and distribute cocks for up grading of local chicken.

Name of Organization: Children of Hope-Uganda

Operational Location: Lira, northern Uganda

Amount Requested: $700

Purpose:

To purchase 5 sewing machines @ $140 each to start a school uniform sewing business to be operated by the caregivers committee of Children of Hope-Uganda.

C of H pays partial school fees and provides scholastic supplies to 163 orphans and vulnerable children, ages 8 to 16, attending 31 schools, both Primary and Secondary, in Lira.

Brief Description of the Proposal and Budget plan:

The objective is to put the school fees support of these 163 children on a
sustainable footing. By helping the caregivers committee start this IGA, income-generating activity, they can generate a steady income stream to be pooled as school fees for all 163 children.

Esther Atoo, Director of C of H, meets regularly with the caregivers committee to make decisions about apportioning school fees, as there is never enough available to help every child. Some of the funds are set aside to provide scholastic supplies for all the children at gatherings at the start of each school term in Feb., May and Sept.

C of H has depended since its inception in Dec. 2006 on donations from Canadians. Since March, 2007, Ugandan Orphans Fund, http://UgandanOrphansFund.giveme aning.com has funded over $25,000 Cdn, but the total school fees for 2009 for all 163 children is $46,445.

A small grant from Life in Africa of $700 to purchase 5 sewing machines would
allow the caregivers to generate income for this school fees pool.

For those applying for the small grants, please find below your individual links to your application forms , click on your names and it will take you there and after completing them, post that link to your discussion which you will have to start on the discussion board for your supporters to give some input in helping to finalize it.I shall be adding more as we go along.

Thanks everyone who has been particpating in this competition, for clarifiication on what the main purpose of the small grant is, This has been a donation from one one of our supporters and
Life in Africa Foundation has been asked to manage the process of disbursing small grants to community based organizations on behalf of this private donor. The donor's stated conditions are as follows:

25% shall provide seed money for a small grants fund to be disbursed by the Foundation in Q1 2009, to 4 visit-verified Ugandan community-based organizations (which may include LiA Kireka). Proposals from no fewer than 7 Ugandan organizations for small, targetted program support grants should be voted on by Life in Africa global supporters in an online poll to determine the 4 recipients. If a minimum of 7 organizations do not submit proposals for online voting by no later than end March 2009, then this entire portion of the gift should be disbursed in a one time grant to The Kids League Foundation no later than 5 April 2009.

Additionally, Life in Africa requires that all of the projects should be:

1-Existing registered CBO/NGO giving details of your operational area.

2- you should have been visited and verified a LiA Foundation official and already posted on the LIA blog.

3- at least one member actively participating online and should have at least one or two blogs from the participating member.

4- concrete plans for the grant with detailed info on how it will create an impact on the lives of the people that you are working with.

5- ready to report on line on the progress of the fund as required by the Foundation. I know that this may be too long but after going through it you will have known which of these organisations you are going to support.

Mengo Kisenyi is one of the largest slum areas in Kampala where income levels are very low and opportunities for learning computer and IT skills are very low. The Kampala Junior Team (KJT) wishes to provide the children and young people of Kisenyi with access to computers and IT training in a secure and supportive environment within or very near the Kisenyi community. With this proposal The KJT Computer Club requests 1,000,000 Ugx to fund 3 months rent, UPS,and basic furnishing of a secure premises from which the KJT can develop and expand the services and resources they wish to offer. Using the computer already owned by the KJT, we will begin to offer individual instruction in the use of basic programs such as Introduction to computer,Internet teaching, and office software, for a small fee. We will also offer use of creative software such as image editing and music making programs. This software will be 'Open Source' (free to use and distribute) and will therefore not require funding, but will provide an additional incentive for children and creative young adults, and working artists too, to use our services. The fees earned will be used to further develop the resources and services, after budgeting for future rent payments, to include a fast internet connection and increasing the number of computers, purchasing educational and specialised software, etc.

JUSTIFICATION

The KJT project is based in Mengo Kisenyi, the area in which its founder Kabugo Mansoor grew up. As he grew up, he knew he was amongst many talented friends and peers, who one by one fell victim to crime, drug addiction, gambling, AIDS or prostitution. These children were neglected, uneducated, sometimes orphaned with no one to care for them, yet many had the bright spark of talent, which simply needed nurturing. Sometimes this was athletic prowess, sometimes music or art and sometimes untapped academic ability, but none could break out of the circumstances in which they lived.

Kabugo formed Kampala Junior Team (KJT) to help these young people realise their talents but also to create some young role models in the communities - young people who were able to break out from their circumstances and who would bring hope to others, who might then be deterred from negative behaviour.

Mengo Kisenyi is one of the poorest places in Kampala, yet is only a few kilometres from the 5 star tourist hotels. This short distance represents the short gap from poverty to success that the project intends to bridge. Currently, only a tiny percentage of children here are able to attend school and spend their days begging or stealing, many living on the streets. Houses in the area, where they exist are ramshackle and there is no sanitation or proper water facilities. In fact the project earns some money to feed its participants by selling water to local people.

Kabugo also managed to use the development of the KJT football team to counter the animosity between street children and slum children, who felt differently about themselves. By playing in the same team, they knew they were no different and some of these negative feelings melted away, reducing levels of violence in these areas.

When Kayiwa Fred joined the project a few years after its inception, he brought new skills and an awareness to link up the KJT project internationally. His knowledge of ICT was extensive too and he had seen demonstrated the value of ICT in feeding the learning of young people. Without some extra headstart, the young people that are part of KJT will struggle to compete for work and the development of a self-sustaining ICT Centre will help plug the knowledge gap that local people have.

ICT Centres are very popular too generally and full of people prepared to pay for a cyber cafe service and thus the team are confident that investing in this development will prove profitable enough to start to expand the services of KJT in new ways. Local people are hugely supportive of the football teams that have been so successful and the more recent theatre and music work that has been done in Kisenyi, but they request more services and thus it is important for KJT to look at ways to fund and meet the needs of the local population. By building its capacity too, KJT can work with many more young people, creating a momentum, which could attract international interest and support.

As KJT expands too, it is not logical to run the operation from a house or hire a variety of different venues for activities. Adults and children need to know where to come and the name of the organisation needs to become more well known throughout the city, through having its own secure office. The LiA funding will help secure this for sufficient enough time to become sustainable.

Much of this commitment is generated by the responsiveness of the young people with whom they work, who themselves seize the opportunities given and run forward with them. Such a project demonstrates its value, when it can show winning football cups against well-funded teams from all over the world, proof that by meeting a young person's needs, there is no limit to where they might progress.

Objectives

1.To provide computer knowledge to the youths and young people in order to copy up with the generation.

2.To ensure that there is less computer illiteracy among the youths.

3.To create an environment were youths can be entrepreneurs using the computers

4.To teach youths how to use the Internet and make good use of web searches for useful information about their studies, health and other matters.

5.Become a self-sustaining social business which in turn enables others in Kisenyi Area to make the most of their own creative or entepreneurial talents by providing affordable, good quality IT training and resources.

6.Become a role model for sustainable social enterprises and organisations interested in IT, enterprise and the arts.

Brief Description of the Proposal and Budget plan:

Introduction
Life in Africa kireka (liak) is a community based organization started by life in Africa foundation that has existed since 1999 in Uganda. One of the major aims and objectives of life in Africa foundation was to form and empower communities and its for this reason that life in Africa Kireka community based organization came to life and registered by the city council of Kampala under welfare and community services department in on June 2008; Registration number NAK407 hence life in Africa Kireka community based organization is nothing other than an offspring of Life in Africa foundation thus seeing one of its greatest achievements.

Life in Africa which is located in the outskirts of Kampala commonly called Banda-Kireka or Acholi quarters has 30 registered senior members and seven senior officials each with different capacities for proper running of the organization. The community has four major programs; that is to say;

internet4change: this program is designed to equip members and non members with computer related skills that can enable to link up both locally and internationally. Secondly are micro successes: since our community is 100% composed of the poorest of the poor, yet may have good business or developmental ideas for self sustainability. For this reason they target any form of micro finance opportunity that they already have experiences in it.
Besides, the organization has children program that is associated with child basic services like discipline, career, dance and drama, school fees search, handwork and among others. Further still the organization does craft production which has been the backbone of all the members.

They make and have made many kinds of crafts similar to paper beads products baskets of different shapes and among other crafts. It’s important to note here that 98% of these crafts depend on foreign market. In other words, they produce what they don’t consume.

This has calumniated into a serious situation rather a problem of no where to sell the accumulated crafts products because the demand by global market has slowed down to almost 5%! Since all the members were depending on these crafts for their domestic challenges including school fees for their children, to heal bit of this problem, the organization has come up with a proposal of 1,000,000/= to be used for diversification of community economy through production of what can be consumed by themselves locally and what requires little amount too.

JUSTFICATION
Candle is one of the sources of power used by many people to substitute electricity, generating for lighting in case other sources of power is not available. There are also other classes of people who solely depend on candle as source of power for lighting; among them is life in Africa Kireka community. Candles are used in many different occasions like birth day parties, graduation parties, and wedding parties, in churches; among the catholic and many others. According to survey done, candles are more used by the locals than lamps because it’s cheaper. It’s also a product that can be exported to wherever it’s needed and a service that most people would welcome. One stick of candle will go for 200/= for retail price and 150/= for whole sale price.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The major goals and objectives for this project is to begin producing what can be consumed by the locals and to supplement on crafts that its market has gone down. This will help not only to provide employment to the members but also innovative skills that they will pass on even to their children. The project will begin by first employing 5% of its members and will go on as consumption realized. This will reduce over dependency on crafts and may lead to the birth of other project to involve other members.

ADMINSTRATION/MANAGEMENT
Ndelo Peter the chairman has already acquired candle production skills and is ready to champion the project by training more three and one other who will lead the production in consultation with the chairman. Jessica Wassa the treasure will champion the sales and marketing. She will work with other members to see that the products are sold and money accounted for. Jessica will then have three people responsible for sales and marketing and shall never be a fulltime job but payment shall be by commission depending on who sells what quantity? By this it will encourage competition to sell for more commission.
For a period of three months, other five members may be involved in the production and in marketing as well depending on the success of the project that we all hope for. Ndelo Peter shall be responsible for making necessary reports online.

comments on the project's financial condition, including any issues that may interfere in the project's ability to maintain the loan repayment schedule, based on interviews with the BORROWER and a review of the project's financial accounts.

Email reminders to the BORROWER 2 weeks prior to every payment due, including the current outstanding loan balance and the amount/date of the next payment expected.

Notification by email to the LENDER whenever a payment has been received from the BORROWER.

At least four (4) international transfers from Uganda to be undertaken at the cost of the INTERMEDIARY according to the schedule outlined in B.3 above.

LENDING CONDITIONS

D. Loan and Repayment Currency

The loan and associated fees shall be disbursed by the LENDER in Euro.

Payments due from the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY shall be made in Euro.

Payments due from the INTERMEDIARY to the LENDER shall be made in Euro.

E. Early Payment

There shall be no penalty for payment in advance of any or all of this loan from the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY, nor from the INTERMEDIARY to the LENDER.

Insofar as the project financed through this loan is still operational, the monitoring and reporting plan outlined in section D above shall be carried out even in the case of early repayment.

F. Late Payments

Late payments from the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY

Late payments from the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY shall accrue a late fee of 1 Euro per day past due, payable to the INTERMEDIARY with the pending payment to cover additional communication costs and management time incurred.

Incomplete (partial) payments from the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY shall accrue a late fee of .002 Euro per day per Euro remaining past due, payable to the INTERMEDIARY with the next payment made to cover the additional loan management costs incurred.

Fees due on late payments will be deducted from amounts paid by the BORROWER prior to calculating new balances and arrears. Unpaid late fees may thus result in additional late fees charged to the BORROWER on partial payments outstanding.

In every case of late or incomplete payment, the BORROWER is required to notify the INTERMEDIARY one week (7 days) in advance. Failure to provide notification of a late or partial payment one week in advance of the scheduled payment due date will result in a DOUBLING of the late fees indicated in section F.1.a-c above.

Late payments from the INTERMEDIARY to the LENDER

Late and/or incomplete payments from the INTERMEDIARY to the LENDER shall accrue a late fee of .0005 Euro per day per Euro past due, payable to the LENDER against the use of these funds outside the terms and conditions set forth in this loan agreement.

In every case of late or incomplete payment to the LENDER, the INTERMEDIARY is required to notify the LENDER two weeks (14 days) in advance with details of the anticipated changes in the repayment schedule. Failure to provide notification of a late or partial payment two weeks in advance will result in a DOUBLING of the late fees indicated in F.2.a.

G. Default

This loan shall be considered at risk of BORROWER default if, after the initial 12 month grace period, less than 40% of scheduled payments due are received by the INTERMEDIARY during any 6 month period.

In addition to the levy of late fees as described in F.1. above, the INTERMEDIARY shall manage borrower default in a phased approach as follows:

When less than 40% of payments due have been received from the BORROWER over a 6 month period, the loan's Potential Default status will be permanently noted at the project's profile page on the INTERMEDIARY's public website. Any additional agreements governing services rendered by the INTERMEDIARY to the BORROWER's project will come under immediate review and be subject to change at the INTERMEDIARY's discretion.

the BORROWER will be invited to re-negotiate alternative loan terms with the LENDER, requiring a facilitated modification of this agreement for which the INTERMEDIARY shall charge a supplementary fee for each modification as outlined in section J. below, in addition to outstanding late fees (to be paid by the BORROWER as part of the re-scheduled balance due).

failure of the BORROWER to respond to invitations to renegotiate the loan terms and/or continued failure to pay at least 40% of rescheduled payment amounts over a further period of 6 months shall result in official reports filed by the INTERMEDIARY with Local Council authorities at the LC-I, LC-III and LC-V levels in the District where the project operates, for the purpose of soliciting their advice and assistance in collection of the loan.

failure of the Borrower to pay at least 40% of re-scheduled payments over a period of 9 months shall result in official reports filed by the INTERMEDIARY with local police authorities, the Uganda Revenue Authority, and the BORROWER's bank, for the purpose of alerting them to potential financial irregularities in the project and soliciting their advice and assistance in collection of the outstanding loan balance. When arrears amount to more than 60% of rescheduled payments due for a period of more than 9 months, the INTERMEDIARY also reserves the right to publish ads in local newspapers with the BORROWER's photo, warning local citizens about the risks of doing business with the BORROWER and publicly renouncing ties to the Borrower's project.

This loan shall be considered at high risk of INTERMEDIARY default if, after the initial 12 month grace period has elapsed, less than 60% of payments actually received by the INTERMEDIARY from the BORROWER have been repaid to the LENDER over any 12 month period.

In addition to the levy of fees on late and incomplete scheduled payments as outlined in F.2. above, the LENDER shall take the following steps in the case that a high risk of INTERMEDIARY default should become apparent:

The LENDER reserves the unilateral right to request a change to the BORROWER's loan repayment instructions.

The LENDER reserves the right to privately and/or publicly inform other local and international parties in known relationships with the INTERMEDIARY of the loan's potential default status, in order to warn them of the potential risks involved in doing further business with the INTERMEDIARY and to solicit their assistance in recovering the loan.

any onlending of funds to additional social entrepreneurs as described in section C.4. of this agreement is at the INTERMEDIARY's sole discretion and risk; repayment performance of secondary loans made with these funds shall not be considered by the LENDER in determining the risk of INTERMEDIARY default, nor in determining appropriate measures to implement for recovery of the full amount paid to the INTERMEDIARY by the BORROWER.

H. Force Majeur

In the case of apparent INTERMEDIARY default risk or any other Force Majeur which prevents the INTERMEDIARY from providing the services included in this agreement, scheduled BORROWER repayments will become due directly to the LENDER. Should such occur, international transfer costs incurred will be paid by the LENDER so as not to increase the total amount due from the BORROWER.

In the case of the LENDER's death at any time during the loan term, any outstanding balance remains payable to the INTERMEDIARY, and may be used by the INTERMEDIARY to establish a perpetually revolving loan fund for social entrepreneurs in Africa.

In the case of the BORROWER's death at any time during the loan term, the promissory note will be waived by the LENDER for any balances not yet paid by the BORROWER to the INTERMEDIARY. In the case of any other Force Majeur that prevents the BORROWER from continuing work on the project this loan has financed, the BORROWER agrees to make every effort to repay the loan from other sources of income and recognizes the ability to re-negotiate the loan repayment schedule that is allowed under this agreement.

I. Modifications to this Agreement

In response to any actual or perceived INTERMEDIARY violation of this agreement, and without prior notification to the INTERMEDIARY, the LENDER reserves the sole unilateral right to discontinue use of the INTERMEDIARY's local collection services, by issuing written alternative payment instructions directly to the BORROWER, copied to the INTERMEDIARY. The LENDER's decision to discontinue the use of the INTERMEDIARY's collection services shall not imply an end to the INTERMEDIARY's reporting obligations as described in section D.2. of this agreement.

Changes to payment transfer instructions, bank account and address details included in the Promissory Note below may be made by any signatory to this agreement at any time, by writing the changes in an email copied to all signatories on the promissory note.

Modifications to the terms and conditions of this loan, including a re-scheduling of loan payments in the case of apparent BORROWER default risk, may be renegotiated with the LENDER at any time at the BORROWER's request. An additional service fee of 50 Euro will be charged by the INTERMEDIARY for facilitating each international renegotiation and re-signing of this agreement.

I. Dispute Resolution

In the unlikely case that a dispute may arise between the parties to this agreement which cannot be amicably resolved through private or public discussion, all legal claims shall be presented against and judged under the laws of the Government of Uganda.

Once repayments begin I shall remit all payments due into Life in Africa's bank account at Barclays Bank, Jinja Road Branch (a/c ______________________) on the 15th day of every 3rd month, as outlined in section B.2. of the terms governing this loan.

Operational location: Kireka Hill, Kampala

Amount requested: UGX1,000,000

Purpose: Maize/Beans growing

Brief Description of the Proposal and Budget plan:

ROCK OF AGES CENTER FOR HOPE - MAIZE/BEANS PROJECT

BACKGROUND:

This venture is to be implemented by the founder members of the project and it will be located at Koro Abili village, 10kms from Gulu town, along Gulu- Kampala Road.

It is to be financed by members subscriptions and contribution of 1,590,000 = (One million Five Hundred Ninety Thousand shillings) and a loan or donation or grant of 1,000,000 (One Million Shillings only)

The core objective for setting up this venture is to help the organization with feeding of the children and where possible sell some part of the products to raise funds for taking care of other activities. For now, we plan to begin majorly with Maize and Beans, and later go into other food crops like; Soya beans, and cassava. The land in question is indeed fertile with adequate rain. All the neighbors are also engaged in farming at various levels and we hope this venture will yield a good return.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

So far, we have been able to buy the 5 acres of land and what remains is now the actual work to begin, right from clearing the land to harvesting.

We expect to plant 5 acres of maize. The yield per acre is expected to be 20 bags of 100 Kilograms each. The 5 acres of maize is therefore to produce 100 bags each season. Since there are two planting periods in a year and we want to try to plant in both seasons, we shall be able to produce 200 bags of maize per year.

On the same 5 acres, we also expect to inter plant beans with the maize. That means we are planting beans on 5 acres and each acre is expected to give a yield of 8 bags of beans. The total bags per season will then be 40 bags and we expect to plant the beans twice a year that will therefore produce 80 bags per year. Each bag will contain 100 kilograms of beans.

The administration of this venture is still mainly in the hands of a few of the founder members, Ms Lucy Lamunu and Mr. Obalim Gerard who is an Agriculturalist.
Casual laborers will do physical work and the work will take in; - clearing the field, planting, weeding, harvesting, sorting, and others. The casual laborers will do Bush clearing and occasionally hired tractors will be used for ploughing.

Weeding and harvesting will be done by use of local tools like hand hoes. However, we plan to adopt better scientific methods of farming to enable us achieve the highest yield possible and to speed up work as we expand.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

Provide food for the center.

Provide an alternative source of income to the center.

Increase the asset worth of the organization

EXPECTED OUTPUT:

High quality beans ready for cooking

High quality maize ( Corns) for flour

Beans and Maize seeds for more planting

Brief Description of the Proposal and Budget plan:

Introduction

Northern Uganda women and children Initiatives(NUWECHI) NUWECHI is a women indigenous grassroots nonprofit organization registered under certificate No S7940 of the Uganda National Board of Non-Governmental Organization.
She has a well defined structure with executive committees and qualified committed staff in place. Northern Uganda women and children initiatives (NUWECHI) aims and objectives are to promote women’s right, welfare , peace, education and health programmes for women and girls in Northern Uganda .
NUWECHI started as an informal network and slowly continued to organize solidarity visits, meetings between conflict affected women, and providing basic medical support, basic items like food, clothes care and love for the most disadvantaged. As we built strength together, we began to realize that women and children suffer most in situation of armed conflicts and yet nobody seems to care and to know; many cases go unreported. They are marginalized as far as human right issues are concern and are face with all different forms of violation of rights one can imagine, they are the most poor and dependent species, women survivors are traumatized and live miserable until death with no support financially ,psychologically, emotionally, materially just to mention a few. this then gave us the spirit to push forward and advocate for women and children’s rights.

NUWECHI has a passion for the disadvantaged and ready to strengthen, raise the voices of survivors and conflict affected women and girls ,advocate for women and children rights and secure services that will make a difference in their lives and bring them together to share their experiences and forge a way forward.

The mandate of the applicant organization is that it is registered to operate in Acholi land (Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and Kampala for Acholi displaced people living in slum /suburbs areas of Kampala. It has been in the grassroots for the last five (5) years carrying out various activities which has benefitted the communities more especially women and children. Presently efforts are being made to support resettling the displaced people from internally displaced camps going back to their home villages, creating awareness on human rights and gender equality, Protect and Promote women and children’s’ human rights, soliciting support for women who suffered violations especially during the war i.e women survivors , girl child mothers and those girls who are defiled at a very tender age and under risky pregnancy and totally needy and confused without direction in life and supporting the displaced women in Kampala slums with life skills /income generating activities so that they can cater for their families and slowly get a way of going back home and be able to fully look after their siblings.

To help us continue with our work successfully, we are requesting your organization to support us with a computer, its accessories and internet connection (MTN- PLUG AND PLAY) for the new office we are setting up in Kampala to ease our work for the displaced women currently quarrying stones at Kireka and those in Namwongo kanyonyoga zone selling petty things like mangoes, oranges, ripes etc.

5- ready to report on line on the progress of the fund as required by the Foundation.

Find below the designed form where you can fill in your names and describe your proposals;

Name of organization: Life in Africa Kireka

Operational Location: Banda-Kireka,Acholi Qaurters Kampala Uganda

Amount Requested: 1,000,000/=

Purpose: Candle Production

Life in Africa which is located in the outskirts of Kampala commonly called Banda-Kireka or Acholi quarters has 30 registered senior members and seven senior officials each with different capacities for proper running of the organization. The community has four major programs; that is to say;

internet4change: this program is designed to equip members and non members with computer related skills that can enable to link up both locally and internationally.

Budget

We will also offer use of creative software such as image editing and music making programs. This software will be 'Open Source' (free to use and distribute) and will therefore not require funding, but will provide an additional incentive for children and creative young adults, and working artists too, to use our services. The fees earned will be used to further develop the resources and services, after budgeting for future rent payments, to include a fast internet connection and increasing the number of computers, purchasing educational and specialised software, etc.

JUSTIFICATION

A Directory of Free and Open Source Computer Software

I'll highlight each program's advantages and possible disadvantages in bold, quotes from the program's download page or home page in italics.

Please add your own comments and observations.

Please add details of any free or open source (free to use, copy and redistribute) programs you use.

http://gimp.org/

GIMP is an amazingly powerful image editor, it does just about everything you'll ever want to do with a photograph, probably far more than you'll ever need! But it's quite complicated to use and is not a 'paint' program, and needs a fairly powerful computer. 'GIMP's biggest appetite is for memory and how much you will need will depend on the how many images you are working with, their resolution, size, the number of layers you use and so on. As a general rule, more is better, but 128MB should be enough to be getting started with.'

http://www.openoffice.org/index. html

I use Open Office instead of MSOffice, I find it has all the functionality I need.

'OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.'

I would add that files created in Open Office take up a lot less space on your hard drive than msword files.

http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_imf fw.html

This is shareware (free to download and use but not to copy/redistribute)

My kids like Image Forge, it's a basic paint program, the only free or open source painting software I've been able to find (excepting trial versions). It's got a neat little animation function and it's very easy to use.

'ImageForge provides you with a set of powerful tools for painting and editing images, photos or other graphics. Create and edit images, acquire pictures from your scanner, digital camera or other Twain-compliant device, apply special effect filters, produce your own photo albums and simple slide shows, and much more.'

http://www.getpaint.net/index.ht ml

open source

I've only just discovered and downloaded this so haven't tried it yet, I'll let you know what it's like when I do!

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.

Hey everyone, it's me John. Everyone knows I'm disorganized. But did you know that workspaces are Wiki. That means anyone can edit or change the page. With that in mind I'm going to put things here which may or may not belong. Feel free to change or delete them.

EACOSS stands for East African Center for Open Source Software. Somehow none of their Web pages seem up right now, but here is the address and phone:

Plot 9-12 Port Bell Rd +256(0)414-223802

Linux Chix Africa Uganda I'm not real big on the name Linux Chix, but I'm really big on the organization. I don't know much about computers and software. It's so frustrating to ask questions because it seems the people I ask make me feel stupid. Geeks--computer savvy people--are notorious for being rude. And Linux Chix are women who got tired of rude male Geeks and figured that it was important to have women answer questions without being rude. I'm thrilled there's a chapter in Kampala.

BROSDI Busoga Open Source and Development Initiative is not in Kampala, nor is it software. However on their pages they've got lots of links to Open Source software. And what the organization does is worth looking to. They use SMS and other tools really effectively and are very transparent about what they do so their good ideas can be seen.

WOUGNET

WOUGNET "Women of Uganda Network is a NGO initiated by women`s organisations in Uganda to develop the use of ICTs among women as tools to share information and address issues collectively." Some of the articles seem pretty technical, but clicking on the Old Web Site tab directs to outdated but somewhat useful pages about open source software.

One thing I like is the organization tags some bookmarks at http://delicious.com/ with WOUGNET. I like Delicious, but I'm not as good about using it as I should be. And I'm bad at tagging. I went to my delicious pages http://delicious.com/protoslacke r too look for bookmarks for this workspace. Ack, not much luck. But I do point out that it is useful. For example Christina was interested in soil block presses. I saved over 50 bookmarks on the subject. Many people here at Ned use Delicious. So if there is a specific subject you want people to research tell us to use a particular tag. In no time many Internet pages relevant for what you want will be collected.

iicd is another organization that works to develop more adoption of opens source software in Uganda.

Inveneo is hardware rather than software but good to know about.

Linux as a computer operating system comes in different distributions or "flavors." One of the most popular ones is an African company, Ubuntu. Their support affiliate in Uganda is E-Tech Plot 250, Kironde Road, Muyenga P.O. Box 8711, Kampala, Uganda +256 (0) 312 260620. That company is obviously a for-profit outfit. I list them just so you can see that businesses in Uganda take open source software seriously.

Free Geek is an organization in Portland, Oregon. I bet there are several members of Ned who know people in that organization. And Free Geek has done programs in Uganda before. So maybe they could be partners or help. At least they are a group that seems worth making contact with.
