Life in Africa supports community based organizations in Kampala and Gulu (Uganda) through an active presence online at a number of interactive global community platforms. The organization is currently restructuring to expand the delivery of webbed empowerment services to community based organizations across the East Africa region.

In this context, 2 ADMINISTRATORS are required to coordinate community program planning, management and reporting at the newly independent Life in Africa Community Based Organizations in Kampala-Kireka and Gulu. Why an online procedure?

Life in Africa operates in virtual community environments to keep our global supporters and partners updated on LiA-funded programs and organizational activities. One of the online communities we rely on the most for transparent sharing and discussing operational information is ned.com (where you are now). The person hired to fill the Community Administrator position will be required to communicate regularly using this and other platforms.

The application procedure for the Community Administrator position is designed to assess each applicant's aptitude for learning new online skills, while at the same time collecting information from applicants in a space that staff from Life in Africa Foundation (Uganda), Life in Africa-USA and the CBOs in Gulu and Kampala can access.

0. Getting Started

Before you can post a question or begin the application procedure, you must join ned.com and the Life in Africa Global group. Please FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY to get started:

  1. Click here to join Ned.com: http://www.ned.com/user/new (you must have an email account to join.)
  2. You will receive an email with a temporary Ned password. When you log in for the first time, we recommend that you click on settings in the green bar at the top of the screen to change your password right away to something you can easily remember.
  3. When you click on settings you will also see a link to edit your profile. Be sure to fill out your profile using your real name, noting Uganda as your location, and including 2-3 sentences introducing yourself to the global Ned community (you do not need to mention your job application in your ned.com profile!)
  4. Click here to join the Life in Africa Global group on ned: http://www.ned.com/group/lia-glo bal/. Once you have joined the Life in Africa Global group, you are ready to start completing the application procedure.

REMINDER: Any and all questions about the application procedure can be posted in the online discussion at http://www.ned.com/group/lia-glo bal/news/7/. Questions submitted by email or private message will not be answered.

To complete the online application procedure, you will need a typed CV in electronic format that you can upload. You will also need to post a letter of intent that we recommend you type and save as a text document in advance if possible. Please read the instructions below carefully to ensure that your CV and letter of intent include all the required information.

1. Prepare your CV

Prepare your CV as a word document or .rtf file to include the following:

  • Personal details, including name, age, phone number, email address and zone/city of residence in Uganda
  • educational details (starting with the highest level obtained)
  • Work experience details. For each previous job please include:
  • the organization name
  • your job title,
  • a description of responsibilities held,
  • the monthly salary you earned,
  • the name and telephone or valid email address of a contact person at the organization with whom your previous employment and salary level can be verified.
  • 2 professional references (name, phone number & email address) whom we may contact to verify your character, abilities and working ethics.

2. Prepare your Letter of Intent

We recommend that you prepare your Letter of Intent as a text document that you can copy and paste into the workspace you will be guided to create at ned.com.

HOT TIP: Do NOT indent paragraphs with spaces before the first line. Separate your paragraphs of text by hitting enter twice, starting each paragraph flush against the right edge.

Your letter of intent should include 4 paragraphs as follows:

  1. Briefly introduce yourself, your qualifications and the position (including the CBO location) that you are applying for.
  2. Summarize your experience relevant to the job description for the Community Administrator position.
  3. Describe an innovation you were responsible for intrducing in a workplace context, and how it impacted others involved.
  4. Tell us what you know about Life in Africa that makes you want to work with this organization.

3. Upload your CV

Upload your prepared CV to the files section of the Life in Africa global group by following the instructions below:

  1. Click on the files tab above the brown bar near the top of this screen
  2. Click on upload in the brown bar near the top of the files page
  3. Click on the browse button to find the file you want to upload
  4. Write your name and the words Gulu Administrator or Kireka Administrator in the description field.
  5. Click upload. Once your file has uploaded it will appear in the file/folder column on the files page.

4. Post your Letter of Intent

To post your letter of intent, you need to create a workspace in the Life in Africa group and type or paste it there.

  1. Click on the workspace tab above the brown bar near the top of this screen
  2. Click on workspace/new page in the brown bar near the top of the workspace page
  3. Name the new page with your full names, like this: ChristinaJordan; click create once you've typed your name
  4. Click the edit this page link
  5. Type or copy/paste your prepared Letter of Intent in the text editing space
  6. Click preview to make sure it looks ok
  7. Once you are satisfied, click save.

5. Complete your Submission

To complete your submission, you need to post the links to your CV and your letter of intent below your name in the list of applicants below.

To add your name and links to the list of applicants:

  1. click edit at the bottom or in the brown bar near the top of this page.
  2. SCROLL DOWN until you find the list of applicants
  3. Add your name, and copy/paste the links to your CV and Letter of Intent below it.
  • To find the link to your uploaded CV right click on the files tab above the brown bar to open the page in a new window. Find the link to the CV you uploaded in the left column. Right click/copy the link location then come back to paste it here.
  • To find the link to your letter of intent right click on your name in the green bar at the top of this page to open your profile in a new window. Links to workspaces you have recently edited appear in the right column below the About section you filled in when you joined ned.com. Find the link to your Letter of Intent, right click/copy the link location, then come back to paste it into this page.

All interviews will be held at LiA Kireka on Saturday 1 February 2008. Members of both Life in Africa community governance bodies (from Kireka and Gulu) will be present and a Life in Africa Foundation staff. Please arrive ontime and bring copies of educational certificates with you to the interview to leave with us until the selection process is complete.

LiA Kireka is located in Banda-Kireka (Kampala) Take the Kinawataka-Banda road toward the stadium straight on from Bugolobi (use the Red Chilli turnoff from Old Port Bell Rd) or left from the maram road that passes through Kinawataka. Follow the Kinawataka-Banda road through the swamp and keep a lookout after 1 km for St. Joseph's School on the right. Turn Right at the signpost for St. Joseph's school, turn right again at the first opportunity to do so. Life in Africa is located in the last compound before St. Joseph's School on the right, behind a papyrus fence.
