SAMPLE WORKSPACE- Communication in the Quarry Villages

Group : A Development Trust seeking to develop lines of communication between groups and individuals to further it's aim of promoting the social, environmental, and economic regeneration of the community.

Location : 3 adjoining villages on the North Wales Coast, population 7,600 approx.

Networks in Place : Telecommunications, Internet, Regional Radio, National Television, Newsagents, Community Grapevine, specialised local groups.

Observations : The majority of households have at least one phone and a TV set. Public call boxes are increasingly scarce. Internet access is good in schools and businesses, but rare amongst the elderly and patchy amongst the lower income groups. Communication within groups is good but between groups it is poor. Poor mobility, lack of transport, low income and diminished social networks seriously affect the ability of some individuals to access groups and communication networks.

Solutions for individuals : Enable access to and education in the use of ICT and mobile phones; enhance transport options to meeting places and to education and resource centres; develop traditional media such as newsletters and notice boards; establish chains of communication at the very local level (street based or housing estates) that are not dependant on modern technology (a mobile phone isn't much use if you have no credit on it, or if you've dropped it and are unable to bend down to pick it up!)

Solutions for groups : Encourage the development and use of shared communication platforms such as websites, newsletters, publicly displayed events calendars (to help avoid conflicting dates and times) and local Information Centres. Encourage the pooling of resources such as printing facilities. Enhance the quality and frequency of Press Releases and do-it-yourself news reports submitted to regional media to raise awareness of group activities,to disseminate information, and to raise the profile of the community.

Please add notes, comments and suggestions here :

Local Communications - Problems and Solutions

Replace this text with your own description of this group.

Contents

Getting Started

Announcements

Directory

Getting Started

A workspace is different. It's a place where people can work on writing
documents together. Anyone can edit, assuming the group permissions
allow it. Just click Edit on the menu bar at the top of the screen, and
you'll see what I mean.

As you begin to edit more and more complex documents, it's important to
keep this plain text clean. Don't be overly concerned about the
presentation of your document; instead, focus on the content and
readability in the plain text. If it isn't readable in the Edit box,
your colleagues won't be able to contribute.

One fun thing about workspaces is that you can create new pages just by
naming them in your document. For example, here's a new page now:
Sandbox Notice that it's a single word, and followed by a single
underscore. If I wanted to create a page with multiple words, I would
enclose the page in back-ticks, like this: My experiments To get
that, I typed this: `My experiments`_

But remember, just creating a new page doesn't make it easy to find. And
if other people can't find your page, what's the point of working on it?
Make sure you don't create orphans. Always think about linking to your
pages from a Home page of some sort. If you can't think of a Home page
for your pages, then at least use an Index page to gather them all in
one place.

Now, another tip on how to format your documents. Remember, the plain
text is the most important thing: it has to be readable to be useful.
So, use plenty of white space. Always leave a blank line between
paragraphs, and before and after headings or lists. Just take a look at
the plain text of this document, and you'll see what I mean.

Also remember to start every paragraph at the left edge of the Edit box;
don't indent paragraphs like they taught you in typing class. If you
indent a paragraph in the plain text, it will end up indented a lot more
on the web page. Use that to your advantage when you like, but
sparingly.

Beyond that, there are a few fancy tricks you might want to learn as you
get more familiar with this workspace. Be sure to refer to the
/help/Punctuation Help document to learn more if you get stuck.

Now, it's time to get back to work!

Announcements

Add announcements here

Directory

Items you may want to include in your group workspace.

People

Projects

Resources
