From the technically outlandish to the tactical and the practical, how can artists market themselves online and maybe even enjoy doing it? Online marketing: what works, what doesn't, how to do more of the first and less of the second. Discover oodles of free online resources that will bring more and more visitors to your web site. Web 2.0, what is THAT all about? Luddites and technophobes, maybe they are on to something? Time for a new web site, now what? What is the one single most important thing to consider when you are building your web presence? Good principals of user interface, information architecture and navigation structure that will not make your teeth sweat. Peer web site reviews if time and desire allow. Presenter: Mark Grimes. Friday, January 25, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Art Institute of Portland, 1122 NW Davis Street, Portland, OR 97209.

Lars, you're a talented artist and educator with great vision and live very comfortably both online and real world. Do you have an interesting web site (or two) for artists that you think they should know about? (one that may be under the radar a bit.)

Hm, thanks. Yes, I would say the Community Arts Network, or CAN, is a "must" to bookmark, rss subscribe, and email sign-up.

pay me $50 and I'll give you the url.

Just kidding.

You just made me think of another site, not directly arts related...but one that artists all seem to love...

TRENDS in ways small companies attract potential customers to their Web sites.

$.87 2007 median cost per click at Google. Ouch

Hi Mark:)

an interesting web experiment to watch might be the Saatchi Online Gallery:

http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk /yourgallery/

which allows anyone to set up a page with samples of their art and info. The biggest drive/difference from the hundreds of other online galleries which allow you to do the same is that it is backed by Saatchi...one of the most well-known contemporary art collectors in the world, and it is able to try to evolve as many experimental platforms as possible. It is a particularly informative site, a social networking site, has a professional blog and runs contests selecting from the artists on site for real world exhibitions in various contemporary art fairs. http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk /form/

Once again, by opening it up to the masses, it begins to filter itself and has become highly competitive for the various contests. But the idea is that everyone has a chance and can benefit from a bit more explosure in the mix with more well-known artists of today.

Hi Mark,

I'll be out of town on Feb 9th as I suspected so I'll miss meet up. Hope to make the next one, and ahum, I'm voting for there to be a 'next one.' Still swimming in workshop information, much fun dog paddling my way through sites and all.

best Lily Gael

Hi Mark, I, too, am still going back to our notes and links to free tools. Everything is still sinking in and will be for a while! I have some minor changes planned to help my website...the tips from the workshop were very helpful. Unfortunately, I've got some unforeseen work to accomplish in the next couple of days and won't be able make our get-together. I'll check back here to see if any notes from the group may be posted? Thanks,

Roberta Aylward

Glad to hear your using the notes, links, workspace and free tools. I know it was information overload...but would rather provide a load of information to use, than just a teaser. We'll miss you at the roundtable on Friday, but if any notes come out of it, will post them here for sure.

So, a few of the notes and ideas from the meeting. The "Google Alerts" in the workspace seemed to be a good hit and has already worked well for members. Good news.

Also, shared stories about recently learning about RSS (real simple syndication) and adding a reader to your browser to really be able to track dozens of important blogs as their updates are brought to your browser realtime via the reader. http://www.google.com/help/reade r/tour.html

A question of where to register a domain came up: http://www.godaddy.com/

And also, if building a site just seems to overwhelming or costly at this time, simply buy your domain ($10) and have it redirect to a blog you can run at blogger.com (or here at Ned, or anyplace) (free). Just make sure, come hell or highwater that you blog at least once a day, even a paragraph or sentence.

Mark, Thanks for giving your time again, for this followup ftf. I've never blogged before, so maybe I'll learn some stuff by just trying at Ned. -- Cindy Lommasson

Both work Cindy, happy you posted here. The one method simply includes information from another post, if you would want that...
