Loan discription:
Aber Dorin is a responsible widow who is taking care of 7 children in her family. Five of the children belong to her, and 2 belong to her sister who died in 1986 at the onset of the northern Uganda war. Aber lost her husband Alex, a UPDF soldier, in 1999 on the battle field when there was cross fire between UPDF and the LRA rebels. The death of her husband in 1999, preceded by that of her parents in 1987 and her sister in 1986 left her totally distorted and disoriented. This loss has also left her with orphans to take care of, which has been very difficult for her.
Aber has managed these problems by being a serious peasant farmer who grows crops for home consumption and for sale. Success in this activity has helped her to pay the school fees for her children and provide for them all the basic needs. Aber is also a traditional birth attendant and this is helping her to make ends meet: whoever is assisted by her in giving birth will give her soap, money and other things in exchange for her services. This has been of great help since the war began, as there has not been enough medical facilities to meet the overwhelming needs of the war-displaced people.
And in her free time Aber has also been running a retail business on the side selling charcoal. She has been buying the charcoal from the Acet IDP camp 20 kilometers from Gulu town. This business, which started with very little capital, has been maintained up to now. Aber chose this business because of rising demand created by the increasing population within the town areas. She wishes to expand this business to meet the rising demand, and is seeking the capital necessary to do so. To do this, Aber hopes to bring charcoal to town at least two times in a month by buying from the village where it is cheaper and transporting it back to Gulu town. She expects to make a profit of 160,000U shillings monthly.
Aber is now seeking for a loan worth 250,000U shillings to help her invest in the busines of selling charcoal which she has been doing at a smaller scale. She will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.
Below is her plan :
- License:................10,000U shillings per year.
- Transport:............................40,000U shillings [monthly?].
- Store:.................................5,000U shillings monthly.
(Store will be shared with friends, who will contribute 5,000U shillings monthly. They are 5 people sharing one store).
- Market dues:...........................6,000U shillings per month.
- 24 empty sacks @500:..................12,000U shillings Once.
- 24 sacks of charcoal@7,000/=.........168,000U shillings.
- Contigency.............................9,000U shillings
Total:.................................250,000U shillings.
