Her income is just never enough to profide all that they need.

She has a lot of experience in the rock quarry and if she starts her own small business instead of working for someone else her income will increase. She could easily show a profit each month of 150,000/= which would allow her children to continue in school

To accomplish this she is seeking a loan in the amount of 250,000/= to cover the expenses and labor of this business. She will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.

To do this business she is requesting loan in the amount of 250,000/=. Once given this loan she will be able to repay in 6 months.

below is her break down:

Grinding…………………………………………30,000/=

From the Kiva web site:

Due to a recent surge in support ignited by viewers of the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, and readers of President Clinton's newly released book Giving, there is currently a shortage of businesses in need of loans. The Kiva.org staff and our Field Partners are working overtime to get more businesses on the website. In the meantime, thank you for your patience!

Loan use: paying labor

Loan terms: 5 months

Loan Amount: 250,000/=

Loan description:

Ayoo Jennifer Akello is an Acholi woman. She is a single mother raising four children. Two are her own children and the two are orphans from her late brother. She left Kit Gum (found in the northern part of Uganda) to come to Kampala in 2003 due to the war activities that where and still are in her region. She settled in the IDP camp known as the Achole Quarters and this is where she still lives today.

When she lost her husband in 1990, life became a hell to her. Taking care of the children all alone was a big challenge. In the camp she started to look for ways she could provide for her children and keep them well by getting them clothes, educating them and even feeding them. With the small money that she saved she started a small grocery selling vegegable, onions, tomatoes and smoked fish. She worked hard and is able to earn a profit of 40,000/= each month. This helps but it is not enough to provide their needs.

In 2005 she joined Life in Africa and for the first time in years she began to have hope. She participates in many income generating activities and it has greatly improved the life of the family. With her newly found hope she is determined to further increase the income by adding a charcoal business.

There fore, Ayoo Jennifer Akello is kindly requesting for the loan of 250,000/= that she wants to use in the charcoal business. She promises that if this loan is given to her, she will pay it in the period of 5 months and bellow is how she is going to use the loan if it is given to her,

Loan use: starting up a grocery

Loan terms: 4 months

Loan Amount: 250,000/=

Loan description:

Lanyero Christine is a Ugandan by nationality, an Acholi by tribe and is 38 years of age. She is a married woman with four children. Lanyero and her family left Gulu because of the war that was in the north. It was so terrible to the extent that it took so many peoples lives. In 1998, Lanyero and her family fled to Kampala and settled on the land (the acholi quarters,), which was offered to them by the King of Buganda to settle on since he had sympathy for the people of northern Uganda.

When she settled in the camp, she began to work in the stone quarry to earn some income. From the stone quarry, she was earning 1000 per day. As time when on, she began to work harder and was able to earn 2000 shillings per day of which she is still earning up to now of which makes her earn 60000 shillings per month.

In 2005,she joined Life in Africa where she learned how to make the paper beads and started to earn between 60,000 to 100,000 shillings most months. Lanyero used her money to start a small business that she runs by her self where she sells things like the tomatoes, cabbages, vegetables and onions. She does well but with a large family she needs to increase her income to profide for their needs.

Her plan is to add capital to expand her business. Demand is high but she needs to add stock to meet this demand. She also wants to add sim sim and charcoal to her inventory which will further increase her profits. To do this she is seeking a loan in the amount of 250,000 shillings. She will earn a good profit on this investment of 110,000 to 130,000/= each month and will be able to repay this loan in 4 months.

Bellow is how she is going to use 250,000 shillings: -

Buying
- Cabbages…………………..40,000/=

Loan description:

Opoka Alex is male Ugandan by nationality, an Acholi by tribe and he is 34 years old. He is married and with his wife he has five children. Three of them go to school and the two are at home.

By 1998, Opoka Alex left his village in Acholibur division found in the Pader district because of the danger of the war. He settled at the IDP camp called the Acholli Quarters where he is still staying up to now. While in the quarters, Opoka Alex worked in the stone quarry from which he earned some money for him and his family. Though he was earning some money from the quarry, life was not easy at all. There were a lot of demands in his family and life became nothing but a struggle to earn money so that he can help the family survive.

In 2007 Opoka Alex did joined Life in Africa and worked as a guard/watch man. He was put immediately on the salary scale and he began earning 90,000/= as his salary at every end of the month. Just like a thirsty man in the desert who finds an oasis, Opoka Alex’s life became better than it had been in years.

He has a good plan of beginning a business selling second hand clothes to his village. The clothes are in high demand and he is confident that the business will be a success but he lacks capital to start it up. He heard about Kiva at Life in Africa and is so excited that his dream may come true. With the money he earns from this business he will be able to send his other two children to school.

He is seeking a loan in the amount of 250,000/=. He will be able to repay this loan in 5 months.

Below is the budget for the 250,000/=

-Buy a bale of second hand clothes at 150,000/=

This is all very cool. One thing I dont understand on the proposals is that it details the expenses but has no detail on the revenues. I would like to see something, using the rock quarry model for example, that shows how much the rocks sell for each month. This would let the lender figure out how long it takes to get the business cash flow positive.

Also - I think it would be helpful to try to break out startup expenses from ongoing expenses

Hi John,

I understand your questions but think I should clarify that these loan proposals will go to Kiva and so the format is designed for their site and their requirements.

For our own loans and projects we do require a little more information like in the Soap Project. But for these it only needs to be a description of the business and an intro to the person, how much they need and what their pay back schedule is. If you look on the Kiva.org site you will see that you don't even see the budget.

We put them up here because they need help in editing the stories. We do require them to have a budget, they do have to verify how they will repay and we do look it over to make sure it makes sense. Our communities must approve these loans before they are sent to Kiva. And believe me, they are tough. If they don't think a business will be profitable or that the person will not be able to pay, they vote no on it and that person has to apply the next month with a better plan. They take it very seriously which is why Kiva was so impressed with the LiA community.

I hope that explains a little.

Owners can edit yes, but we put them in a workspace instead of a thread. It made it much easer to be able to find them and to edit them and to get the answers to questions since they were all organized and in one place. We could also keep track of all the requirements needed like a photo. Then when they were ready it was an easy task to get them uploaded to Kiva. Thats how we did it before. I can set up the workspace tonight if that is agreeable.

Makes sense. Does Kiva prohibit creating a budget or talking more about the revenue side? I wonder if the average US lendor would understand how breaking rocks by hand can be a business so I would think it would help to have more on the revenue side, but I dont know the Kiva process or lendor well enough to judge.

I am not sure it is a matter of prohibiting. They expect that the supporting organization does the screening (in our case that would be the community). From everything I have seen on Kiva, their donors want to read about the person and decide to help them based their reaction to the story and to the person, not to how sound the business plan is. It is totally people giving a helping hand to other people in need. And they have now loaned out over $10 million with a 97.6% full payback record so they must be doing something right.

Activity: Buying and selling charcoal.

Loan amount: 250,000/-shillings.

Loan period:6 months.

Loan discription:

Aber Dorin is a responsible widow who is taking care of 7 children in her family. Five of the children belong to her, and 2 belong to her sister who died in 1986 at the onset of the northern Uganda war. Aber lost her husband Alex, a UPDF soldier, in 1999 on the battle field when there was cross fire between UPDF and the LRA rebels. The death of her husband in 1999, preceded by that of her parents in 1987 and her sister in 1986 left her totally distorted and disoriented.
This loss has also left her with orphans to take care of, which has been very difficult for her.

Aber has managed these problems by being a serious peasant farmer who grows crops for home consumption and for sale. Success in this activity has helped her to pay the school fees for her children and provide for them all the basic needs. Aber is also a traditional birth attendant and this is helping her to make ends meet: whoever is assisted by her in giving birth will give her soap, money and other things in exchange for her services. This has been of great help since the war began, as there has not been enough medical facilities to meet the overwhelming needs of the war-displaced people.

And in her free time Aber has also been running a retail business on the side selling charcoal. She has been buying the charcoal from the Acet IDP camp 20 kilometers from Gulu town. This business, which started with very little capital, has been maintained up to now.
Aber chose this business because of rising demand created by the increasing population within the town areas. She wishes to expand this business to meet the rising demand, and is seeking the capital necessary to do so. To do this, Aber hopes to bring charcoal to town at least two times in a month by buying from the village where it is cheaper and transporting it back to Gulu town. She expects to make a profit of 160,000U shillings monthly.

Aber is now seeking for a loan worth 250,000U shillings to help her invest in the busines of selling charcoal which she has been doing at a smaller scale. She will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.

Below is her plan :

License:................10,000U shillings per year.

Transport:............................40,000U shillings [monthly?].

Store:.................................5,000U shillings monthly.

(Store will be shared with friends, who will contribute 5,000U shillings monthly. They are 5 people sharing one store).

Market dues:...........................6,000U shillings per month.

24 empty sacks @500:..................12,000U shillings Once.

24 sacks of charcoal@7,000/=.........168,000U shillings.

Contigency.............................9,000U shillings

Total:.................................250,000U shillings.

Activity: Selling charcoal

Loan amount : 250,000/=

Loan term: 6 months

Below is her loan description:

Arach Evalyn is Ugandan by nationality and was born on 11/09/1978 in Bira Jubi village in Pabbo sub county ( Amuru district). Currently she is living in Gulu prison barracks. She is living in the Prison barracks because her husband is a prison warden so the family is staying within the quarters. She is a responsible woman with 3 children; the youngest is 3 years old.

She started primary one at Pabbo primary school and stopped in primary six. She had to grow up fast when in 1987 both her parents were killed by the rebels. Her father was 39 and her mother 32 when they were killed. At that moment, her whole life changed. And she is not alone. So many lives have been lost and properties lost in this 20 year war.

At the moment she is engaged in a retail business selling charcoal. She is buying it from a place called Pabbo which is 24 miles from town. At the moment the price per one sack in the town is 14,000/= but from the village it is only 7,000/= shillings. She is making a profit of 80,000/= shillings per month with the little capital she has. She also cares for an elderly aunt and she helps sell the charcoal in the market. The demand for charcoal is constant so this is a good business to have.

She became a member of Life in Africa in September 2006 where she engages herself in bead making . Once a month (production day) she can sell her beads and earn some money for survival. She has also learned business skills and now wants to expand her charcoal business. This will give her more income which she will use to pay school fees for the children and other basic needs. She will also be able to save some for the future. She anticipates that she will be able to profit 160,000/= per month.

To accomplish this expansion she is seeking a loan in the amount of 250,000/= and she will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.

You can view her budget for the loan as below:

Store........................................15,000/=

Market dues.............................120,000/=

Transport:.................................10,000/=

26 Empty bags (sacks)..................26,000/=

26 Bags of charcoal...................182,000/=

License:.....................................5,000/=

Total......................................250,000/=

Loan use: Buying fruits and vegetables.

Loan term: 06 months.

Loan Discription:

Lucy Okello was born in 1955 from Pabbo sub-county in Gulu district (Northern Uganda). Her husband is a carpenter and she grows food as a farmer. When her food crops are harvested, part of it is sold in the market to get school fees and the remaining portion is for home consumption(food)

In her village she grew food on a large scale and always had plenty to sell as well as to feed her family. However, the family was forced to leave their home and move to Gulu where they could be safe from the LRA rebels and have services like schools, hospital and markets that were no longer available due to the war. In town, she and her husband both work tirelessly to sustain their family. She became a member of Life in Africa and has learned the art of rolling paper beads. She earns a little money selling these beads.

She would like to expand her farming business. Fruits and vegetables are the most demanded and expensive things from the market and if she had some capital to invest she could greatly increase her sales and profit. She has been selling at the market for the last two years and she expects that she will be able to earn at least 150,000/= per month.

To accomplish this she is now seeking for a loan amounting to 250,000/= to help get her started. She will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.

Below is her budget for the loan:

Loan discription

Ayoo Lillian is an Acholi by tribe and was born in 1955. She is a married lady with four children. When the 20 year war in the north became unavoidable, life was so difficult as many lost their lives or were displaced. Lillian for fear of her life, had to take refugee in Kampala in August 2000. On her arrival in Kampala the only place to settle in is Acholi Quarters which is on one of the hills that the King of Buganda offered to them.

It was her first time to be in the city and the way of life became difficult. No cultivation for food, no barter or trade and no free things. To survive here you needed money and she had none. The option for Lillian was to involve her self in stone quarry activities that helped her generate some little capital . Then she found Life in Africa and she was able to earn some money participating in the craft programs.

Lillian now wants to supplement her income by starting a petty business as a fish monger. Fish is a big part of the diet and is always in demand so she is confident that she will be able to make a success. She is seeking a loan in the amount of 250,000/= and she will be able to repay this loan in 6 months.

Below is her budget:

Putting a shade………………………………………..30,000/=

Buying a container for keeping fish…………………10,000

Loan discription

Arach Hellen is a married woman with eight children who are all school going age. She was originally from Northern Uganda but she came to Kampala in 1996 when Northern Uganda was experiencing Kony's rebel activities. This forced her to move her family away from the region and they settled in an IDP camp known as the Acholi Quarters.

When she settled in Acholi quarters , life was not easy. The only real source of income was to work in the rock quarry. Later she joined Life in Africa and was able to participate in the paper bead project which has enabled her to make additional income. But she and her husband are working hard and are always looking for ways to increase the income that sustains their large family.

They have acquired a plot in the Acholi quarters and their plan is to construct a simple mud two room house that they will rent out. Housing is in high demand and they will be able to rent each room out for 20,000/= per month. This will increase their income by 40,000/= each month which will improve the families standard of living. It will only take two weeks to build the house and they can have tenants move in within two days.

She and her husband have saved 300,000/= and now seeking for a loan in the amount of 250,000/= to add on and make this plan happen. They will be able to repay this loan in 6 month.

Below is the budget:
