Community Soap Project

Project Description

This is a community owned, community run liquid soap making business. The members of the community will participate on a voluntary basis and will be rewarded with community bananas (points) based on the amount of their participation that can be exchanged for cash once a month. The members will participate in the making of the soap, the packaging, and the sales and marketing of the finished product.

Questions to be answered How many bananas per hour will the members earn. Or is this not figured on hours

Bananas given depends on the work load and and each banana has a money value this means more hours of work more bananas more sales and more money.

How many bananas for selling.

2 for the start and this will depends on the profit margin

Everything should be clearly spelled out before the project starts so there are no misunderstandings.

How much money are the bananas worth

this will depends on the profit margin

Equipment Required

  1. Universal-wide range PH indicator of 1-14 or 2-10.5

=6000
  1. Containers(3)
=18000
  1. Water tank(1)
=15000

Total............................... 55,500 Ushs

questions to be answered

Are all of the above a one time purchase.

Yes

Why do you only need one gas mask

Gas mask is needed because the sulphonic Acid reaction with the sodium hydroxide(caustic soda) alkaline will involve some heat and fume.

Using a gas mask indicates toxic fumes. Will these fumes affect the surrounding areas and be harmful to people who breathe them in

Not so dangerious but the all thing will be prevention will be much betterthan cure and no effect to the enviroment.this is because even where I was trained the chemist did not merely even wear but he told me its recommeded to have with will carrying out the production.

Chemicals Required

Chemicals needed to make 400 litre

  1. 20 kg sulphonic Acid
=100,000 Ushs
2.5kg Caustic soda (sodium Hydroxide) =40,000 Ushs
3.20kg Tibro /Ungerol/Slies =110,000 Ushs
  1. 4 kg Urea
=6,000 Ushs
  1. 4 kg Sodium Metasilicate

  1. 400 litres Water
=2,000 Ushs
  1. 5 kg Salt
=1,250 Ushs

Total................................... 351,250

questions to be answered

Please clean up the prices so it is easier to understand.

an example would be

5kg Salt........=1250

Are the chemicals cheaper if you buy in a larger quantity. Are they available in larger quantities.

If you bought in larger quantities would that save on transport costs

Probably.

What kind of urea is it???

Misc. Costs

  1. Labels....(40 stickers on the containers)
32000 Ushs
  1. Packing 5,10 and 20 litre jerican plus (recycled water bottles)
20000 Ushs
  1. Marketing
20000 Ushs
  1. Transport cost
50000 Ushs

Total............................................ 122,000Ushs

questions to be answered

what will the marketing money be used for

small scale adverts .

will these costs apply to each batch of 400 liters that are made

Not really but to creat awareness about the begining of something.

where will you get the labels and why only 40

Locally here in Gulu though it looks abit more expensive than in Kampal because there is only one printing company making the stickers and Cutting cost was why we only needed this but for every bottle or acountainer which is going to the buyers but in real sence we need more than 40.

Profits

Grand total........................................ 428,750 Ushs

only This is the amount required to make the first 400 litres of liquid soap

5 litres sells for 7500 Ushs.

400 liters will sell for =600,000

The following batches will cost =373250 That will give a profit of =226,750 for each 400 liter batch

questions to be answered

I am assuming you will need to apply for a loan to start this up. Will you apply to Kiva or the Community loan program or do you have another source for the start up money.

*No I don't have any source but the all thing was any source I can get the money from and get started.Kiva or community(but community has no,I believe)

How many liters do you plan to make per month

As soon as we get started and the demand is high this implies that more would be made. But the amount of litres are undefined.but 400 in 12-48 hours and market demand is really demanding.

how many liters do you project you can sell per month

Big firms like (restaurant) ,takes more than twenty litres 2-5 days and the small scale consumers believes in buying in little quantity but now I can not really predict the numbers of litres i can sell.

You can do the editing of the questioneires.

Things to Do

Sample of Soap:

Do we have a sample of the soap already? yeah.We do.

If not, what would the cost be to produce a small amount (maybe 4-5 liters) to use as a sample?

Safety Equipment:

Safety glasses or goggles 6000

Rubber gloves 6000

Market Research

Is there currently liquid soap for sale in the local market? yeah.

If so, what is the price it sells for. 28000

What quantities is it sold in? 3,5,10,to 20 litres

GULU SOAP WORK

What will you call the soap? We must have a name to put on the label *

Decide what the label will look like. Can someone draw one to show an idea? **Ezra is working on the different labels of which the community will decided on*

What information needs to go on the label? Are there any rules or regulations in Uganda that we need to be aware of? how it works, what it is,where it comes from, who makes it,why and maybe the sponsors

not much may be registering beaureau of standard

Chemicals

Where will you have to buy the chemicals needed? Are they available locally or do you have to bring them in from Kampala or some where else? yeah,We have to bring from Kampala

List the chemicals and their prices in the quantities they are sold or offered? I am not talking about how much you need but how the chemicals are sold. Are there different size containers, can you buy only what you need, what is the discount or difference in price if you buy larger quantities.
