New Marketing Idea

You all probably know we do a lot of Awareness Parties at TEN where we educate people about trafficking and sell Made By Survivors products. Sort of a social justice Tupperware.

There is a new trend in home party companies - creating online or virtual parties. Instead of getting folks to come to your house you just email a bunch of friends with a code or website link. They can then shop for stuff and the "host" gets a product discount based on the amount the "guests" purchase.

There are a lot of possible advantages to adding this to TEN's marketing plan. There is a large group of folks that really just don’t have a physical party, but might still want to help the survivors. We would create special web pages and email templates that had shorter educational films, so we would keep some kind of education component.

We would also use it to help market our other partners like Free the Slaves. We could, for example, offer them a commission on all the sales their members created.

And of course, the logistics of managing this will be a lot easier.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Well...it would be a way that I could contribute here, John. I am not likely to hold a part here in Ubon and get anywhere but I could do a virtual party. I do still have a few real life friends in the US!

John - for an event at a California high school last spring, we connected kids at WE Center Gulu with kids at the school in CA through flickr. They are still chatting, so it doesn't require a simultaneous online presence. Might be a nice way to invite some of your partners to the virtual party if you've got some with the capacity to occasionally connect.

That is a good idea. We are working on getting better internet connections to our parnters. The issue we have not yet figured out how to manage, and will probably just have to figure out as we go, is how to get the US kids/adults to focus on the lives as the survivors as they are now and not dwell on the past. The survivors really are not interested in any public dispplay of their past.

That is why we have been slow to try things like that, but we are going to go forward at some point.

Yep. Great idea. I would think having it within a time frame could help, deadlines on things tend to drive action. Maybe a special thing/offer for the first five minutes at the top of every hour. Many directions to go, but worth doing for certain. Good one.

I doubt if many people would learn Second Life just to attend but if you were able to find hosts who are already entrenched there, then they could leverage the strong SL networks. Maybe a test on Better World Island?

I had not thought about that but that is the kind of thing that the virtual party opens up for us that we could not do before.

very good idea, i think a time-frame and a time-hook (this week is UN Human Rights day, therefore ...) would make it more affective.

So - I have this up and working. I want to add a bunch of things to automate it and make it easier, but I want to test it a while first.

If any of you want to volunteer - details at: http://www.madebysurvivors.com/o nlineparty
