Kasinja Tonny Henry posted on the Volunteers thread about the groups planning for their Community Development organization. The topic is well worth discussion and a thread for it seemed appropriate. Here's his comment:
The name of the CBO:
We have thought of a name that encompasses all our programs and it is:
Community Development watch organisation ( CDWO) and it will have programs like:
-Book project for poor students: publishing and distribution of reading materials, distribution of exercise books, pens, pencils to students. -The school project: offering voluntary teaching services to schools, donation of furniture, computers, connecting schools to internet, chalk, textbooks, renovation of existing schools and constructing new schools for poor students. -Antipoverty program: Providing interest free loans to people in the community, provision of technical financial assistance to the community, creating partenerships with different organisations in the same cause.
Please you are welcome to comment. Thanks

STRATEGIES OF BOOK PROJECT FOR POOR STUDENTS
We realize that no single person has enough time to spend days and weeks writing a free textbook. What we propose is to combine many small contributions into a quality text. Here is how we can accomplish our goals with a team effort:
Step 1: Core content
Use many small contributions to get the core content. Here we ask many people to contribute small sections, notes or worked examples that they have and are willing to allow us to include. Every contributor will be credited as an author.
Step 2: Flow
Once we have contributions we will edit every section for flow and consistency. Once this is complete we will have a rough draft textbook.
Step 3: Outcomes-based layout and focus
Members of the project will work through the entire text editing and ensuring that the book meets outcomes-based criteria and is pitched at the correct level.
Step 4: Credentials
External editors who study science education will then edit the chapters.
Step 5: Fundraising
The book will be available in soft form on line and at our offices so that they can be printed. Upon licensing any business will be able to print copies on their own printers and provide copies to local schools. This will allow communities to raise money or sponsorship and ensure that their children have access to textbooks. The project will also work to find sponsorship opportunities to cover printing costs.
Step 6: Distribution
Besides local businesses sponsoring schools we would like to provide copies to the Mindset Project to distribute to their schools. We will also begin a publicity drive to raise awareness and money to print copies.
Step 7: Expansion
There are many other education initiatives which could benefit from a free quality textbook. We shall expand the project to other developing countries.

I'm so bad with thinking of names. I understand that you want a CBO that general enough to be flexible. But the name you're thinking of doesn't seem to tell the story of your group. For example Creating Educational Books for Uganda could be CEBU. It's not the best name but tells something immediately about your plans. I think a good name for your organization will do that.
A friend started a CBO. At the last minute they discovered that the name they wanted to use had been used by another organization--that organization didn't seem to still be functioning. They needed a good name quick. I told my friend a story by and author, Robert Fulgham. And I proposed that they call the group Busoga Shining Light Association with the motto "shining in dark places." The name has been a sore spot. LOL partly because the group didn't really choose it. The problem is once an organization has name there are disadvantages to changing it. The name isn't too important, but is important.
My suggestion is to choose a name that tells some story about the group.

It is just a thought, Henry.
I should have written it this way:
Uganda S.P.A.C.E. (Science, Publishing and Community Elevation) so at first glance people realised the letters had expanded meaning.
Cheers,
Gayle
