:Title: CDWO Community Development Planning :Author: John Powers :Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:28:32 PST :URL: http://www.ned.com/group/ugandabooks/news/5/ Kasinja Tonny Henry `posted`_ on the Volunteers thread about the groups planning for their Community Development organization. The topic is well worth discussion and a thread for it seemed appropriate. Here's his comment: The name of the CBO: **We have thought of a name that encompasses all our programs and it is:** Community Development watch organisation ( CDWO) and it will have programs like: -Book project for poor students: publishing and distribution of reading materials, distribution of exercise books, pens, pencils to students. -The school project: offering voluntary teaching services to schools, donation of furniture, computers, connecting schools to internet, chalk, textbooks, renovation of existing schools and constructing new schools for poor students. -Antipoverty program: Providing interest free loans to people in the community, provision of technical financial assistance to the community, creating partenerships with different organisations in the same cause. Please you are welcome to comment. Thanks .. _`posted`: http://www.ned.com/group/ugandabooks/news/2/11/ ---- **Comments** :Author: John Powers :Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:32:44 PST Kasinja `wrote`_: We have already contributed money here to make a constitution and register the organisation. But before that we had suggested the CBO name, goals and objectives, structure and we wanted you to comment about them, though we have not seen any comment yet. We have choosen a board of directors already from here and we are to include the Board of advisors from that side, then we shall be ready to make a constitution and then register. We really thank you plus David and Evvy for the wonderful suggestions. Currently we are working on the proposal which we hope to send to you all to read through and advice us. The project is already on ground and we have gone to two secondary schools this year to teach science lessons. Next month, we are planning to go to Rakai district to survey about the schools there and we get started. Otherwise we appreciate every idea from you ned family because it contributes much to the sucess of this project. Thank you very much. .. _`wrote`: http://www.ned.com/group/ugandabooks/news/3/19/ ---- :Author: Kasinja Tonny Henry :Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2008 03:38:30 PST We need to choose a cbo name, please advise us. ---- :Author: Kasinja Tonny Henry :Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2008 05:44:48 PST STRATEGIES OF BOOK PROJECT FOR POOR STUDENTS We realize that no single person has enough time to spend days and weeks writing a free textbook. What we propose is to combine many small contributions into a quality text. Here is how we can accomplish our goals with a team effort: Step 1: Core content Use many small contributions to get the core content. Here we ask many people to contribute small sections, notes or worked examples that they have and are willing to allow us to include. Every contributor will be credited as an author. Step 2: Flow Once we have contributions we will edit every section for flow and consistency. Once this is complete we will have a rough draft textbook. Step 3: Outcomes-based layout and focus Members of the project will work through the entire text editing and ensuring that the book meets outcomes-based criteria and is pitched at the correct level. Step 4: Credentials External editors who study science education will then edit the chapters. Step 5: Fundraising The book will be available in soft form on line and at our offices so that they can be printed. Upon licensing any business will be able to print copies on their own printers and provide copies to local schools. This will allow communities to raise money or sponsorship and ensure that their children have access to textbooks. The project will also work to find sponsorship opportunities to cover printing costs. Step 6: Distribution Besides local businesses sponsoring schools we would like to provide copies to the Mindset Project to distribute to their schools. We will also begin a publicity drive to raise awareness and money to print copies. Step 7: Expansion There are many other education initiatives which could benefit from a free quality textbook. We shall expand the project to other developing countries. ---- :Author: John Powers :Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 19:52:37 PST I'm so bad with thinking of names. I understand that you want a CBO that general enough to be flexible. But the name you're thinking of doesn't seem to tell the story of your group. For example Creating Educational Books for Uganda could be CEBU. It's not the best name but tells something immediately about your plans. I think a good name for your organization will do that. A friend started a CBO. At the last minute they discovered that the name they wanted to use had been used by another organization--that organization didn't seem to still be functioning. They needed a good name quick. I told my friend a `story`_ by and author, Robert Fulgham. And I proposed that they call the group Busoga Shining Light Association with the motto "shining in dark places." The name has been a sore spot. LOL partly because the group didn't really choose it. The problem is once an organization has name there are disadvantages to changing it. The name isn't too important, but is important. My suggestion is to choose a name that tells some story about the group. .. _`story`: http://www.naturalhealthtechniques.com/Inspiration/the_meaning_of_life1.htm ---- :Author: Betty sakaru :Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 20:11:43 PST ...ah,i think John power is right.on the other side,i to think that it is so important that you people, the group, sit down, study well the goals and the objectives that you will want to be part of the team, then from that, you can end up with the a name that really fits you cbo and a name that will sale the cbo. ---- :Author: Gayle Rogers :Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 20:39:52 PST Here is my first thought only idea - for what it is worth!!! :) Uganda SPACE - Science, Publishing and Community Elevation ---- :Author: Kasinja Tonny Henry :Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 03:20:15 PST Gayle rogers it sounds a good name. ---- :Author: Gayle Rogers :Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 03:31:48 PST It is just a thought, Henry. I should have written it this way: Uganda S.P.A.C.E. (Science, Publishing and Community Elevation) so at first glance people realised the letters had expanded meaning. Cheers, Gayle ---- :Author: Kasinja Tonny Henry :Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 03:32:27 PST John powers, your suggestion is good too,but let us discuss with the members here. Thank you. ---- :Author: John Powers :Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 16:31:28 PST I like Gayle's name it says all of your goals. I also agree that it's good to talk about the name, because as I say the name BSLA was picked in a hurry and I think there's been regret about the name ever since. So it's good to choose from alternatives. ---- :Author: Kasinja Tonny Henry :Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 04:38:03 PST We have finally decided to take Gayle's name with alittle modification to : Uganda science publishers and community elevation organisation ( Uganda SPACE Organisation).
