John posted this in the Plan B thread:

Google has a great way to celebrate their existence 10 to the 100. The deadline for submissions is October 20, 2008. I plan to submit an idea. I think there's something to my idea, but I hardly imagine it will be selected. I hate writing proposals! Still there's something really wonderfully spare about Google's application form. The questions to answer provide focus.

Not trying to add more work to the pile. But I would participate in a collaborative effort to submit the WWC to the Google project. I think the process might help us all to be better able to talk about the WWC to others.

Please use this thread to discuss anything and everything to do this proposal!

1412 - a rich-poor partnership

(note the numbering of areas has now changed - see bold below)

This is a thread that will offer a chance to collaborate in a real-life WCC simulation, by looking at the kind of information people need to have in order to get started in their role as active participanta in a List B connection or partner area.

The World Connectory Project is all about this:

Each place listed as part of a List B (economically developed or 'richer') country will be allocated a place listed as a List A (economically less-developed, developing or 'poorer') country as a partner for five years to see how the two partners might be of mutual benefit.

The project needs to be about specifics: what specific people in one area might do in relation to specific people in another area. So we need a specific area to discuss, in order to see what the WCP challenge will actually amount to in an actual, real case.

Hence the title of the thread: I went to a RNG (Random Number Generator) site, customised one of the options on offer so that I would be given a single random number between 1 and 2,400. This
would then give me a way of focusing on just one partner area, the one with the corresponding number to one of the List A connection areas.

And the number given to me was 1412.

This, I then discovered, corresponds to:

Niger - Niamey capital district: communes 1 & 2

The numbering of areas has now changed so that WWC Area #1412 is now in Nicaragua. But at the time I started this thread, the area now listed as WWC Area #1420 was then #1412. Sorry if this causes any confusion!

So the task is - I hope some of you might join in with this - what information can we find out about WWC area #1412 that may be of use to the List B partner area to which it will randomly be linked when the WCP is eventually launched?

I'll post back in an hour's time with whatever I can find out....

About the BOOK PROJECT FOR POOR SUTENTS IN UGANDA, it is a charity project aimed at helping poor students in Uganda who can not buy expensive text books and reading materials. We are also working around to reduce illetracy and poverty levels in Uganda through educating and training the future generation. Currently we are located with in Makerere University, faculty of Agriculture but this year we are to graduate and hope to rent some place in Kampala. The project was founded by me and 6 other friends from makerere university i.e Wangi Godfrey, Nalubega Teddy, Ayaa Filda, Matovu David, Lukyamuzi Mohammed and Kagwa Shaphan in March 2007 We started with the science subjects like biology, physics and mathematics because the reading materials are scarce. We would like to produce all educational books from primary , secondary up to university level taking into consideration reading materials for Udults. When we write the manuscripts, we hand them to the publishing company to be published at low prices. This has helped many poor students but we are limited with the computers, printers, and related stationery. We also go to schools which lack science teachers and we volunteer to help these students to learn. We not yet registered with the country registrar. We would love to expand the project to cover the whole country and to start publishing by our selves with time but funds will give us what to do.We also have an idea of starting to build schools for poor children in the future. So that is where we are now, and we invite any one out there to be part of us by giving us advice, donation of any materials necessary and any information to make this project a sucessful one as it will reduce to the illiteracy level and poverty in the country. --

The World Connectory Project will link every place in the world's poorest countries with its own partner-place in one of the world's wealthier countries.

How that link is used will be up to the people living in the places that are linked together. But without putting some basic information about each place online, it will be hard to get started.

If you know no-one in your partner area (that's the place you'll be linked to), you will still be able to contact someone there if you are able to contact the local newspaper or radio station there.

Or it may be people in the rest of the world have already heard of your part of the world because of somewhere famous - or someone famous - who lives there. That could be a useful link.

Or there may be organisations where you live that already have international links. It may be easiest to start by building on these links.

So this is a place for sharing information about your own area's

main local newspaper

special places

worldwide organisations already active in your area

Or you may just want to make some other comment on this.

It aims to make available on the web, through a Worldwide Connectory, details of where precisely in the world international charities, non-profits, non-governmental and community-based organisations are currently working or where they plan to work in the near future.

It will focus particularly, but not exclusively, on the following areas: poverty, community development (especially to protect the vulnerable), education and vocational training, wildlife and the environment, clean water, health and sanitation , IT access and the development of appropriate technologies, wider access to microfinance and the role of the social entrepreneur.

The World Connectory Project is in the process of dividing all the world’s wealthiest and most impoverished countries into geographical units of equal population size. Every five years, these units will be put into pairs by a random allocation process. The paired communities will be invited to take an interest in each other and voluntarily to share resources to further their mutual self-development.

For this reason, we are asking the organisations mentioned above to share with us locational details of the communities that will benefit from their projects. By this means, we can provide a resource list to people everywhere of worthwhile initiatives already taking place in the precise area of the world with which they and their neighbours are to be randomly paired for the period 2009-2014.

Participation in the project is of course entirely voluntary and people will be asked not to change in any way their support of any charitable organisations to which they are now donating. The World Connectory Project is seeking an overall increase in the levels of community investment and of charitable donations worldwide by providing an additional focus on the needs of the world’s developing countries. It will be left to individual community pairings to decide how they may encourage new and existing projects within their own localities, but we hope the Worldwide Connectory will serve as a manual to promote as a priority the projects that are listed within it, since these will already be operational or in an advance state of planning.

The project was first discussed and developed in the Omidyar.net community and since September 2007, information about the project can be found at http://www.ned.com/group/wwc/ws/ index/.

I would be happy to answer any further questions you may have. If there is information about your organisation’s work that you would prefer us not to publicise for any reason, we would hope to cooperate fully with your wishes.
