About

My name is Kalanda Fred. Am fourteen years of age, I live in Uganda in east of Africa. I grew up in a family of thirty other children being adopted by my grand mother as I didn’t get a chance to see my parents- died when I was still a baby. My grand mother has always had responsibility to take care of us but didn’t have enough support. We used to go hungry every day, no soap to wash, no money for medication. I was forced to escape from home and ended up as a street kid. Life at the street was not really easy for me as I used to lack what to eat and usually was tortured by fellow street kids. I used to sleep on the floor of streets but usually was disturbed by the police in the middle of my sleep. I used to fall sick very often and could not get access to drugs. My life was really hard.In 2002, I decided to leave the street and went to work as a porter in the mechanic garages in the surrounding suburbs, where I got a man who housed me. In 2003, this man advised me to go back to school to complete my primary school and was responsible for paying my fees. Life became interesting then. I completed my primary school in 2005 and I got a second grade. My hope came to an end in 2006, just as I was planning to join secondary school when this man who was taking care of me died. I was told by the late’s wife to leave her home. My life was depressed and lost hope. I decided to go back to village but I thought of my education and decided to stay. I started to collect water for money to the people in the area since my friend’s mother allowed me to stay at their home. In 2006, I started senior one with the money I had collected from fetching water but this money was not enough to cater for my school needs. I had to drop out of school in June 2006. I would like to ask any one out side their to support me to archive my dream. I would like to be an Engineer.
