As some of you know, I am mentoring Debrah Akello in Ben Parkinson's Butterfly Project. Debrah's father is ill and unable to work and this has meant that there is not enough money for school fees for all of the children in the family. I would like to get the money for Debrah's fees but unfortunately, right now, it is not available in my pocket or bank account. Her school fees are about 200,000 Ugandan Shillings (about $100 US) and are due in the next 2 weeks. If you are willing and able to help me gather this sum, please let me know ASAP.

Linda, Is this amount for just one term or is it for the whole year which is 3 terms in Uganda?

I can not answer that question with any assurance. I asked Ben for assistance/advice and was told "Debra's fees were around 200,000 shillings".

Apparently her father has been diagnosed with appendicitis. Strange to have 2 cases so "close" together when:

Frequency

United States

Appendicitis occurs in 7% of the US population, with an incidence of 1.1 cases per 1000 people per year. Some familial predisposition exists.

International

Incidence of appendicitis is lower in cultures with a higher intake of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is thought to decrease the viscosity of feces, decrease bowel transit time, and discourage formation of fecaliths, which predispose individuals to obstructions of the appendiceal lumen.

does she go to public school, private school or boarding school?

I am asking so that I can help figure out a way to help her.

Evvy, Ben is the one with that information. I haven't a clue.

Thanks Mark. I have another donation of $30 so that gets me to $55.

I can put in $10 if you tell me where to send it.

Evvy, do would Life in Africa USA policies make you able to collect donations for a specific child like Deborah?

Sorry Linda, I have been occupied the last few days. Why don't you moneygram the money. Is Ben there? If he is you can moneygram to him. If not you can contact Grace or Peter and they can help you get the money to her. We use moneygram exclusively since it is the fastest and most reliable way to transfer money.

The money has been sent to Ben who will get it to Debrah. He had approached her already and agreed to loan her the money and she was to prepare a paper for him today on how the loan would be repaid. He asked if we would like to underwrite the loan or what. I have taken the bold leap of telling him that I thought the repayment idea was a good one and that she should repay into a fund that could be built up to help herself or others pay school fees in the same way. A Revolving Fund for her first social business? Nicholas, Mark and Christina: if you object, or disagree, please let me know ASAP.

Another piece of interesting information. If you send money as a gift rather than a payment, the Paypal fees are not taken out of it!

A note from Ben:

Ok, wonderful. And I will suggest the idea to her about the repayment. She will probably come over this evening, so I will advise her accordingly. I gave her the money around lunchtime and she paid it into the bank, so it could be transferred into the school fees account. She will re-attend school tomorrow.

Sure, I could see it being a revolving fund if others agree. I would also very much like to see her posting here at Ned and even providing the occassional picture if she can as well. A further depth of relationship and engagement.

The engagement here is coming....we are already working on that.

I am happy for it to be a revolving fund. I see it as potentially doing more good that way.

Mark, Akello has already posted a photo of herself here.

I have just received $35 from Gayle Rogers...yes, she is still alive!

I will forward that to Ben toward the revolving fund.

Man, this is a great group!

Linda just advised me of this thread, so let me send my appreciation for your concern for Debra (or Debrah, not sure which). She does check NED quite often, to keep tabs on the Butterfly Project, but I think is the only one on the project registered here at the moment.

I have not had an opportunity to discuss the issue of putting the money to a "school fees fund". When Debra is at school I don't see her often, but today is Uganda Independence Day (and tomorrow is a Butterfly session for Kampala), so I will endeavour to have a proper chat.

Many thanks, again, to all for reading/contributing.

EDIT: Spelling

Thanks Linda for the kind heart! Its unfortunate that i dont have the financial ability to assist that Girl at the moment but iam suggesting that if her financial situation doesnt improve in a years time she can email me at: twekembe@yahoo.com for a bursary in our Vocational training Project for the Vulnerable Youth in Mukono District, Uganda. We have already acquired a bulky consignment of training equipment from The Netherlands and we in final stages of construction of a Vocational training Classroom Block with a sitting capacity of 180 Trainees. I think by mid 2011, we shall have got the money to complete it. Linda, you cant see the Project at: http://ta-crusade.yolasite.com
